Berlin and Italian Asset Controls Enforced in War Ties
Berlin announced by executive order that German authorities would freeze assets of U.S. subjects in Germany effective immediately. Observers note the term may understate the scope as measures likely include blocked accounts and strict controls. Italy responded by freezing American credits, blocking payments to Americans and ordering disclosure of American credits within 20 days. The moves come amid broader Axis tensions with the United States and Allied financial measures.

Mead questioned if OPM favored Army construction to let Aluminum Company of America buy the project after five years.
