Rio Grande Cuts Through a Levee Near Bernardo

The Rio Grande, at about half spring peak, cut a levee near Bernardo 45 miles south of Albuquerque last night, prompting nine San Francisco families to evacuate again. Flood waters threatened Highway 60 at the Bernardo bridge, while farmers sought relief for 600 acres. Elephant Butte reservoir capacity is ample to control floods this year, with snow runoff estimated at 2,000,000 acre feet.

Mayor and State Engineer Discuss Roswell Flood Plan

Mayor Thomas J. Hall and city engineer Lea Rowland met acting state engineer W C Smith to review the Roswell flood control project. The talks followed plans for work if voters approve a 5 mill tax levy at the July 8 special election. Directors of the Pecos Valley Artesian Conservancy District attended.

Ban on Oil Exports From the East Coast

Secretary Ickes proposed a complete ban on oil exports from the east coast without prior government approval. The move follows a 240000 gallon shipment to Japan halted amid an eastern seaboard shortage threat. R K Davies sent telegrams to 32 shippers urging no offshore sales without office review.

Fatal Highway Crash Near Tucumcari Claims One Life

A California woman died and two others were treated for minor injuries after a car struck a bridge railing on Highway 66 five miles west of Tucumcari. Mrs Mary Roe of Claremont died shortly after the crash. Survivors include Mrs Carolin Roe of Canoga Park and Miss Minnie Van Zoeren of Clinton Oklahoma. Also in the car were Miss Sylvia Ratzioff of Colony Oklahoma and driver Reese Kincaide of Clinton Oklahoma. The group was en route to Oklahoma after a missionary Indian workers conference in Farmington. Funeral plans for Mrs Roe were pending.

Japan Ends Negotiations With Indies Over Oil and Rubber

Japan abruptly cut off economic talks with the Netherlands East Indies after failed efforts to secure larger oil, rubber, and tin shipments. A joint communique says normal relations will continue while observers see a step back from Indies economic penetration. Kenkichi Yoshizawa urged a reconsideration but the Dutch governor-general stood firm on June positions.

Rehearing Sought On Paying Lien Case To Be Filed

State supreme court rehearing will be filed at Santa Fe around July 25 to challenge a ruling that paying liens fall under the four year statute of limitations. City attorney Ross L. Malone Jr. notes the decision impacts many municipalities including Roswell and Santa Fe with bonds secured by paying liens valued at $177,000 in Roswell.

Kenneth Schwab former Roswell businessman dies in Clovis

Funeral services for Kenneth Schwab former Roswell businessman who died yesterday morning at Clovis will be held tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock at the Talmage Memorial Chapel in Roswell. Schwab managed the Western Auto Supply Company store in Clovis where he had lived six years after an extended illness.

Nathan Salmon Dies in Santa Fe Rich From Poverty to Fortune

Nathan Salmon, a Syrian immigrant who turned pawned watch proceeds into a Santa Fe theater and Albuquerque real estate fortune, died at 8 a m in his Santa Fe home after a long illness. He would have been 75 on July 14. He arrived 50 years ago with 75 cents, later owning three Santa Fe theaters and substantial local holdings. He lay bedridden in Albuquerque for months before returning home to die. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs.

Manslaughter And Perjury in Car Case

In Santa Fe New Mexico two men face perjury charges from testimony at a coroner's inquest into the death of Demetrio Pino a 37 year old carpenter. Enrique Gurule driver of the other car remains jailed as involuntary manslaughter charges are prepared.

Memorial Service for Robert Kellahin Planned in Roswell

A Masonic memorial service for Robert Kellahin will be held at Roswell Lodge No 18 A F and A M at 7 30 p m on June 25. Worshipful Master Hugh M Huff Jr announced the program includes a memorial address by Thomas J Hall past Grand Master of the New Mexico Grand Lodge. Kellahin joined St Andrew Lodge No 48 in Edinburgh in 1892 and served in many lodge roles during 46 years in Roswell.

Three Sentenced By Judge McGhee

W. J. Clements and R. M. Dooley pled guilty to bad check charges and were each sentenced to 1 to 2 years in the state penitentiary by Judge James B. McGhee in district court. Cora Walters pled guilty to forgery and received a suspended 1 to 2 year sentence. Harry Downs pled not guilty before Pat ONeill J P to uttering a worthless check for 160.42 dollars. Date of preliminary hearing has not yet met.

Davis May Recover From Bullet Wound
