A moist air front produced downpours across eastern New Mexico with measurable rain in Clovis Las Cruces and Roswell. Totals included 4 inches at Pleasant Hill in four hours and 2.16 inches in Las Cruces causing flash flooding. winds up to 40 mph and telephones knocked out. Farmers welcomed rain though some wheat harvests delayed. temperatures ranged from 50 in Santa Fe to 100 in Deming with a statewide forecast of showers and cooler air.

A Tulsa intersection’s traffic signal went dark for nearly four hours as ants fed on insulation inside the control box. Electronics Technician Bob Ogan says the insects found a tasty wiring coating, bridged wires to the metal case, and caused a short. Insulation was replaced with a less attractive material.

Police said two teenagers were injured when a motorcycle hit a curb at 1409 W Fourth St. Shelly Rankin 15 suffered a broken leg and Betty Cagle 16 bruises both taken to Walker Air Force Base and St Marys Hospital. Local Man Hurt After Being Found Unconscious on Highway
Lloyd William Hardcastle, 56, of Roswell, was found unconscious in the highway east of Lovington near State Roads 272 and 21. An unidentified man brought him to Lea General Hospital where police said he might have been struck by a car. He is listed in fair condition with fractured ribs a brain concussion and cuts.

Lordsburg Highway Collapse Blamed On Poor Materials
A U S Bureau of Public Roads engineer testified before a House subcommittee that the Lordsburg New Mexico highway collapse resulted from substandard materials and workmanship not the design. He said the project was properly designed and would have succeeded with proper supervision. The state later returned 726 000 of the federal share and sought approval for a 550 000 rebuild plan.
