Adams to face probe by House subcommittee on Lordsburg road

A House public works subcommittee agreed to send members to New Mexico to question Jack Adams a Santa Fe contractor if he cannot testify in Washington within a week Adams suffered a heart attack April 21 and again last April 21 delaying testimony on the 4.16 mile Lordsburg New Mexico highway project begun in 1958.

Indian Crushed In Rolling Pickup Tragedy Near Shiprock

Shiprock resident Harry Scott a Navajo Indian died from head and internal injuries after being ejected when a pickup truck rolled three times four miles east of Shiprock New Mexico. Driver John Begay also of Shiprock was injured. The death marked the 138th highway fatality of the year while the previous year at this time counted 165.

Maid of Cotton from Silver City chosen for New Mexico

Teresa M. Chaparro, 22, of Silver City, is New Mexico’s 1961 Maid of Cotton. Albucquerque’s Shelby J. Smith and Roswell’s Mary K. Teague were named alternates. Chaparro will compete in Memphis in December to represent New Mexico in the national contest. She graduates from New Mexico Western College and plans to teach at Cobre High School in Bayard while pursuing a master's in guidance and counseling.

Lightning Fires Burn in New Mexico and Arizona Forests

Lightning started fires across four national forests in New Mexico and Arizona. Fire on Tierra Amarilla Mountain exceeds 200 acres before containment efforts, while fires in Gila and Cibola NF are largely controlled, and several fires in Coronado NF near Tucson burn acres of brush. Fire crews fought through mud with bulldozers and pumpers, aiming to contain the spread.
