Census Shows An Increase In State Costs and Debt
The census study of New Mexico finances for 1940 reports rising revenues and expanded costs plus a larger state debt. Tax collections rose 11 percent from 1939, offsetting a 4 percent drop in non tax receipts to yield a $1.2 million advance. Total 1940 revenue reached 25.47 million while 1939 was 24.31 million. Taxes were 16.44 million, non taxes 9.03 million. Major tax: sales tax over 9 million, with motor fuel 4.44 million, general sales and use 4.196 million, alcoholic beverages 719 thousand. General and selective property taxes 2.178 million. Federal grants exceed 3 million in non tax revenue, highway grants 1.98 million, public assistance 618 thousand, other 1.443 million. Costs rose overall with operating payments up 12 percent. debt increased by about 10 percent.

Senate Votes For 50 Month Pay In Armed Forces
