Boastful Admiral Second Set Back From U S

A Japanese fleet retreating from Midway Island suffers heavy losses as American defenses convert into a strong offensive. Admiral Nimitz reports the enemy appears to be withdrawing with contact lost last night. U S losses include one destroyer sunk and one carrier hit. Local Youths Enlist in Marine Reserve as Officers

Three Roswell and Capitan youths enlist in the U S Marine Corps Reserve for officer training. Harald Ira Miller, Jack Swisher, and Lowell Claire Cozzens will complete college first, then attend ten weeks of basic training at Quantico before Officer Candidates School. Miller stars inUNM football, Swisher wrestles and pistols, Cozzens plays football and basketball.

Five Pearl Harbor Recruits Sworn In On Courthouse Steps

Five young men were sworn in as Navy recruits on the courthouse steps yesterday as part of 12,326 nationwide inductees six months after Pearl Harbor. Flood Control Case Presented To Board Of Rivers, Harbors

President asks for 39 billions more for War Dept

President Roosevelt asked Congress for a new appropriation of 39.4 billion dollars for the War Department for the next fiscal year ending June 30 1943.
