Nora Carter leads as governor with a slate of officers chosen by 286 delegates at the 26th annual Girls State convention in Las Vegas New Mexico. A wiring fault in an air conditioner caused a fire in the upstairs apartment of the LaGrone Funeral Chapel at 900 S Main. Reported at 10 36 p m Wednesday, firefighters stayed until 1 30 a m. Only living quarters were damaged, service to remain available, dollar loss not yet set.

Raymond F. Waters 60 editor of the Hobbs Daily News Sun died at Lea General Hospital after a heart attack. Survived by widow Mary, a twin sister, brother, and three stepchildren. Funeral at First Presbyterian Church Hobbs with burial at Prairie Haven Cemetery. Memorials to College of the Southwest library. Waters served as editor since 1966 and held other editorial roles.
