May Was Hot and Dry in Roswell Weather Month

The May report from the local weather bureau notes an unusually hot dry month with a mean temperature of 71.4 degrees, higher than the 69.4 degree normal. Precipitation was 0.81 inches versus 1.09 inches normal, and the 98 degree high on the 29th was the hottest May reading since 1916.

Navy Fliers Stay in New York for 18 Days

New York June 1 AP The navy anchored for an 18 day stay in New York harbor behind the flagship of Commander-in-Chief Franklin D Roosevelt. About 35 000 sailors will have a long holiday in Manhattan with at least 1 900 000 dollars in spending money. The pay day was Wednesday as the fleet on parade passed the President’s flagship Indianapolis.

Debutante Virginia Johnson Dies in Kerosene Fire

Virginia Johnson, 22, daughter of State Treasurer Charles G. Johnson of Sacramento, died from burns in a kerosene garage fire four blocks from home. Lions Club speaker hails Boy Scouts and youth programs

Simms to Send Proxy at GOP Meeting in Chicago

Former Congressman Albert G. Simms will not attend the National Republican Committee gathering in Chicago next week but will send his proxy. He and Mrs. Simms sail for Europe June 16. Mrs. Simms travels to Washington next Wednesday with Mr. Simms following a few days later. they expect to return to Albuquerque late in August.

Car Stolen Last Night Is Found

A 1929 Ford coupe owned by Henry J. Hughes was stolen around 9 45 last night from north of the Roswell Drug Store and found abandoned on East Bland this morning with blown tires. Authorities believe the tires were damaged crossing the railway tracks. The thieves have not been located.

Parade Honors Sergeant Duthie at New Mexico Military Institute

A parade honored Master Sergeant James Duthie retiring after a long Army career begun in 1908. He served in the 14th 7th and 15th Cavalry, spent time in the Philippines and France, and has been a New Mexico Military Institute instructor and adviser. He will move to Berkeley California as the institute and cadet corps extend best wishes.

Rioting flared in downtown Los Angeles in front of the County Welfare Department. One man was perhaps fatally injured, ten policemen were severely hurt, and a number of rioters and bystanders were cut and bruised.

Colored janitor jailed for stealing courthouse stamps

Melvin Hunter, a colored janitor at the courthouse, was fined twenty dollars and sentenced to twenty days in jail by L. L. Johnson, J. P., on a charge of stealing twenty dollars worth of stamps from the courthouse.
