Forest fires spread north in Washington and Oregon

A northern Washington fire sweep threatens Cedar Falls and surrounding towns as embers from strong winds reach Portland suburbs. One firefighter is dead and several logging camps have burned. Ranches between Portland and Corbett, about twenty miles east, are destroyed as the fire moves eastward.

Coal prices set at $3 ton as mines reopen

Washington June 1 American public will pay from ten a cent less for coal as long as strike continues under an agreement reached between Secretary Hoover and the non union operators. Department of commerce officials said this cut from prevailing prices was assured. As a result of Hoover's final conference with operators prices to the consumer will be based upon three dollars a ton at the mines.

Foreign trade of America on a decline

Washington reports today that America's foreign trade continues to fall. Exports in April were 315,099,595 dollars versus 240,463,106 last April, while imports totaled 217,073,382 dollars, down from 254,579,325 in the prior April.

House Votes Not To Press Investigation

Washington June 1 The Woodruff Johnson resolution calling for an inquiry into laxity at the justice and war departments in war grafts failed in the House rules committee by 7 to 4 ending its bid for investigation. Posse Resumes Man Hunt for Negro Slayer

Posse members resume the man hunt for Char lie Williamson, wanted for shooting Deputy Sheriff Knanbel near Pilgrim. Reports of a sighting six miles east of Nixon drew armed men, but a thorough search found no confirmation. Authorities believe Williamson may head toward San Antonio as the recent tip proved false. The Roswell Advertising Club held a lively meeting with 28 members present. Discussion led by Mr Murdock focused on advertising for retailers and consumers. Only 3 Tons of Clothing Needed for War Relief Drive

Phoenix Arizona May 26 Only three tons more of old clothing are needed to complete the Near East Relief Drive quota for Arizona and New Mexico. Roswell residents are urged to donate clothing and shoes in up to young sacks sent to Twenty Central Building Phoenix. The appeal seeks to save Christian people from hardship next winter. Rabbits Driven Near Roswell Face Bigger Roundups

A small rabbit drive four to five miles northeast of Roswell, directed by County Agent Thomas, yielded nine rabbits and faced poor weather. Officials expect a larger raid to curb the pest population in the area. The report follows a broader note on India where wild animals caused 2,339 deaths and 20,043 snake bites in 1921.

Last night brought the best rainfall in a year across Roswell and southeast New Mexico with totals from .58 to two inches in various districts. The Berrendos measured 1.1 inches while Pecos river regions and towns like Clovis Hope and Carlsbad reported two inches. Weather signals a general statewide soaking aiding cotton, farming, and stockmen as plains, mesas, and canyons received heavy rain.

Man Shot by Texas Sheriff Sends Body to Pittsburgh

The body of N C Benhum of Pittsburgh who sold Magnolia Oil was shipped home after Sheriff Joel N Hale shot and killed him. Hale surrendered to a justice of the peace, posted bond at five thousand dollars, and continued to serve as sheriff. No statement was made and the examining trial date was not set. In Indianapolis the American Legion warned ex soldiers face increasing personal crises as they adjust, with two crisis reports daily. The Legion called for hospital funding under Langley and seeks to liberalize the Sweet bill to allow government treatment for late appearing war injuries.

Man Found Dead In Water Barrel At Denton Home

J. W. Benson a 50 year old bachelor was found dead slumped in a barrel of water at his Denton Texas residence. Authorities believe he slipped while dipping a bucket and plunged headfirst into the barrel. Tom Fort Jr returned this afternoon from State College where he had been attending for the past year.

Hartford, Conn May 31 Allan Church chief examiner of immigration says the Americanization craze after the war lowered the standard for naturalization.
