Allied and Communist forces begin pulling back on the Korean front under the armistice. U N and South Korean troops withdraw two kilometers to form a buffer zone while island radar stations are evacuated. Panmunjom hosts first supervising talks as Gen. Clark signs the truce document and U N commands wind down.
Allied and Communist forces agreed to begin exchanging about 87 000 prisoners of war on August 5 at Panmunjom. The plan calls for the Reds to free around 400 captives daily and the U N Command to deliver roughly 2 760 prisoners each day including 360 sick or wounded. The armistice commission set detailed exchange steps as five truce bodies met in Panmunjom. Major General Blackshear M. Bryan called the first group meeting like walking a tightrope. Additional developments marked the first full day of the Korean armistice with front lines pulled back to create a two mile buffer, fortifications blown, and island evacuations under way. South Korean President Syngman Rhee asserted unity with the United Nations against potential political breakdown. Polish and Czech officers were en route to Panmunjom for Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission duties, with Swiss and Swedish delegates expected soon.
New Artesia Board of Education hired five teachers including Verlon Davis as basketball coach and high school mathematics teacher. Jack Barron becomes assistant football coach and possibly baseball coach. Robert Kline heads audio visual education. Herbert Beasley named junior high band director. New York Hospital said Sen Robert Taft's condition has deteriorated in the last 24 hours. He is responding less well to treatment and not taking food satisfactorily after exploratory abdominal surgery for a hip ailment. No further bulletin unless his condition changes.
Albert Nohl of the State Taxpayers Assn repeated that federal aid for public schools would bring federal control. He cited welfare and health programs as examples and opposed a July 17 opposition to funding for school construction. State Supt. Tom Wiley and NM Education Assn. leaders challenged his stance.
Relatives here confirm John Justin Leonard of Albuquerque died in Korean fighting, the 170th New Mexico native to fall. Leonard’s wife Lydia had resigned from Sandia Base at month end and planned to meet him in San Francisco on his return to the United States in September.
Officials reported the Korea armistice observance in Albuquerque largely passed with little pause. Citizens were asked to stop for a minute of prayer at 10 a.m. yesterday. few paused as traffic and business continued.

Fort Worth reports Robert O. Martin of Dalhart was named president of the Federation of Texas National Farm Loan Assn. William Burnett of San Marcos was elected vice president and Raymond Pitts of Denton secretary treasurer.
Brooklyn and Chicago split a 13 to 8 game with late rallies and key blasts. Campanella and Klippstein anchored relief while Willis and Church contributed in a tight pitching duel.
Eu gene Tibbs and his beer loving monkey Happy reunited in BLUEFIELD after six weeks apart. Tibbs had offered a reward as Happy was chased by dogs during a Virginia creek swim. Two boys later trapped the monkey in a smokehouse and returned her to Tibbs, who kept Happy for 16 years.
An American B47 Stratojet bomber flew nonstop from Limestone, Maine to Fairford, England in 4 hours 45 minutes, covering 3120 miles at about 609 mph and shaving 37 minutes from the prior record. Pilot Joe (last name unclear) set the record on June 6.
U S Navy headquarters disclosed that five ships were sunk and 82 were hit during the Korean War. Casualties reached 337 dead and 1,585 wounded as naval action occurred near shore against Communist shore batteries. The sunk vessels included four minesweepers Pledge Parkridge Pirate Magpie and the tug Sarsi.
Major Danny Thompson former New Mexico Military Institute polo coach reported feeling better after a heart attack Saturday in Colorado Springs where he led the NMMI Broncos to the 1952 national title. He was listed very serious on arrival, with his wife and Mrs Thompson confirming improvement yesterday.
A. C. Goen, 73, longtime Floyd County Democratic Executive Committee member, collapsed yesterday while tending his flower garden in Floydada and died shortly after.
Del Rio Texas has been recertified as a critical defense housing area and will remain under federal rent control until April 30, 1954, or until trial housing aspects lessen.
Secretary of State Dulles said the United States will not concede Korean unity at the price of Red Chinese UN membership. He will visit Korea next Sunday to meet President Syngman Rhee to discuss a U.S. Korean security pact and a potential 90 day walkout if the conference is a sham. The plan includes a provision to station U.S. forces in Korea and a bipartisan Senate delegation. The UN may limit its delegation to combatant nations as the Aug 17 General Assembly meets to set the political conference site and agenda.
Ranchers and state groups oppose an Interior Department plan to move 6 000 sheep from Fort Wingate to Fort Stanton claiming the move would injure local water supplies and degrade the land. State welfare director Alva A. Simpson Jr leads a protest while public health board chair Steiner Mason warns tuberculosis patients could lose hospital water. The government has yet to act on transferring 26 000 acres of Fort Stanton lands.
The House Post Office Committee shelved the administration’s must bill for postal rate hikes today due to strong opposition and looming adjournment. Chairman Rees said hearings in the Senate are unlikely and adjournment limits make continued work impractical this week. The administration seeks higher rates to reduce the red ink, proposing a rise from three to four cents for first class letters.
Washington reports that American families will be informed first about men killed wounded or missing in Korea. News of casualties will appear two to three weeks later as the military system prioritizes notifying next of kin with accuracy. A preliminary Korean War casualty total will take about ten days.
