Barnett farm changes hands as an elegant country home sells for thirty five thousand dollars. The transaction marks a notable real estate event in the county with buyer and seller names not disclosed in the clipping.
Richard F. Barnett sold an ideal twelve year farm east of town to R. T. Burge who recently moved to Beaumont Texas. The $35,000 sale includes a brick residence, forty acres of orchard, sixty acres of alfalfa, an artesian water source and water rights. Burge plans immediate improvements including a large barn and stock, with turkeys to be raised on the property. The farm fronts the Second extension east of Main Street.
Kemp Lumber Company votes to raise capital stock from 50000 to 150000 at a stockholders meeting. The firm, based in Roswell with branches at Lakewood Artesia Elida and Texico, expands its operations and strengthens leadership including President R. H. Kemp and Vice President F. L. Austin.
Lieutenant Charles England navigated the U S cruiser Chattanooga when a rifle bullet from the French armored cruiser Dupetit Thouars’ crew struck him. The incident occurred as the Chattanooga moved from the harbor to a target off Chefoo, China, and England died later the same day.
The French cruiser squadron fired from the deck at water targets while the American crew landed men on a barren island at the harbor entrance. Nine French ships opposed seven American vessels. Lieutenant Clarence England of Little Rock Ark, son of J. E. England, was killed at Chefoo. officials say the shooting was likely accidental and apologies are expected.
Waco Texas voters go to the polls today under the Terrell election law for the state Democratic primary. Many voters remain disfranchised due to failure to pay poll tax, but turnout is expected to be heavy.
Mr and Mrs J W Stockard returned last night from Denver where Mayor Stockard attended the Hiks reunion and remained for several days after the meeting. Mrs Auld, sister of Mrs Stockard, is still visiting in Denver.
S. B. Owens, who bought the Geo. Medley place east of town, is moving his household goods back to Alan Reed, Tex. His family will return to that place soon to be near relatives and a married daughter. Mrs. Owens wants to live there near relatives.
Mrs. John W. Thomas will perform at the May Mee-Clane recital Thursday evening in the Southern M E Church. Admission is 35 cents.
Mexican shopmen strike at Aguas Calientes and Chihuahua on the Mexican Central demanding the same wages as American workers. The action threatens to halt the line while the Mexican railway union head says native strikers form independent unions and are not part of the larger organization drawing attention.
Russell Sage’s estate, estimated at 70 to 80 million dollars, appears destined for charitable distribution under an accord between Sage and his wife. Close associates say the vast wealth will aid worthy objects, though Mrs. Sage has not commented on her plans.
Victoria B C July 28 Steam er Athenian from Japan reports Japan moves to subjugate Korea as a protectorate. Japanese troops guard the palace and restrict entry to only those allowed by Marquis Ito. Ito met the emperor who ordered court reforms, signaling continued Japanese domination.

E. E. Orr of Torrance, injured when a horse fell on him and treated at St. Marys hospital for two weeks, came home briefly from a sight seeing trip to Dexter and plans to stay in Roswell for two more weeks.
Fred Brose disbursing agent for the U S Reclamation Service in this district arrived from Carlsbad with Dr. E G Lind inspector of disbursing agents for the government. They will stay a couple of days to examine the books in Brose's office in this city.
