In Las Cruces, voters backed a $5 million, 200-bed hospital on land leased from New Mexico State University by 3 401 to 1 274. Opponents urged building on county or city land. Voter turnout reached a record 4 675 for a single issue election.
Washington officials say the federal government's income may exceed original estimates by about 4.5 billion. The revised projection depends on current tax rates and possible future changes, with receipts likely ending between 115 and 116 billion as of next June 30, not yet finalized.
Segregationist Jim Johnson led the Arkansas Democratic gubernatorial primary with a 14 000 vote margin as counting continued from 300 unreported boxes. Frank Holt, tied to Gov. Faubus by opponents, ran second and both former state Supreme Court justices led the field toward an August 9 runoff.

House Republican leaders withhold support for a compromise open housing provision within the omnibus civil rights bill. The plan would ban discrimination in housing sales and rentals while exempting individual homeowners and agents acting for individuals.

Gwinn said most animals moved in to the new zoo location and rabbits at the old site will be disposed of due to an unspecified disease. A grant application seeks 180600 in federal funds for a 13 acre Joyce property picnic area expansion.
The GOP Policy Committee delayed action on the housing provision after a split among Republicans. Civil rights leaders led by Roy Wilkins urged restoring the open housing section as in the Johnson bill. Rep. Rhodes announced a Thursday poll of Republicans, with potential rejection of the section reining in GOP support. The vote to bring the bill to the floor failed 105 to oppose out of 125 Republicans, with 200 to 180 passing the motion to proceed.
Secretary of Labor Wirtz urged Congress to drop emergency legislation to end the airline strike and push negotiators back to bargaining. He warned against White House intervention and said a last chance for free bargaining should be used while noting the strike affects 60 percent of air traffic and 66,000 workers.
CHICAGO AP Richard Speck 24 is indicted on eight counts of murder in the slayings of eight student nurses. The Circuit Court set arraignment for Monday after the grand jury presented eight indictments to Judge Edward F Healy. Speck also faces charges in the Davy murder. He is reportedly recovering from a chest ailment and cuts.
Premier Nguyen Cao Ky warned that the United States must invade North Viet Nam or endure a prolonged conflict in the region. He urged continued aid for five to 10 years or decisive action as Viet Cong activity and air strikes escalated around Saigon.
The Power Commission ruled for El Paso Natural Gas Co. and Transwestern Pipeline Co. to expand deliveries to Southern California, adding 250 million and 290 million cubic feet daily from New Mexico basins, with rate reductions planned across NM Arizona California West Texas and Nevada. The ruling contrasts with Gulf Pacific’s rejected Texas Gulf Coast gas plan.
