Gessert on State Farm Debt Board

Las Cruces July 23 AP The Emergency Relief Administration in Santa Fe announced Will Klein of Las Cruces as state supervisor of the State Farm Debt Conciliation Committee. He will coordinate with 31 voluntary committees and with federally named conciliation commissioners led by Judge Colin Neblett. The list includes J C Smith Albuquerque Edward C Gessert Roswell J Simpson Clovis and others across New Mexico.

16 Die In Flaming Bus On Ossining Hill

At least 16 people perished as a motor bus carrying over 50 passengers from Brooklyn to Sing Sing Prison plunged down a steep Ossining hill, exploding into flames and wreckage spreading across two blocks of lumber yards. Dozens injured, some missing. several survivors saved from the Hudson River.

Grave fears for safety of Admiral Byrd at Little America

Grave concern for Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd grew as a tractor party could not locate the marked trail from his weather outpost. The group was 50 miles from base on a 123 mile run and orange trail markers were lost beyond that point. Byrd had begun his lonely sentinel duty four months earlier.

In Santa Fe on July 23 AP reports Gov A W Hockenhull plans to oust Progressives who backed the Democratic state ticket in 1920 and at least the governor in 1932. He says any understanding with Governor Seligman ended when they aligned with the Republicans and that the debt is paid. He does not know how many Progressives remained on the state payroll.

Heavy rains drenched southwestern Texas prompting localized flooding alerts. Officials reported scattered strong storms as residents assessed water damage and monitored rising creeks. No injuries were immediately reported.

Episcopal Bishop Found Drowned Near Glacier Park

Bishop William F. Faber, leader of the Episcopal Church in Montana, was missing since Friday night from two medicine chalets in Glacier Park. He was found at noon today drowned in Paradise Creek, confirming a fatal discovery in Montana.

Gen Wood to be put as adjutant gen New Mexico

Santa Fe July 23 AP The resignation of Brig Gen Osborne Wood son of the late General Leonard Wood Adjutant General of the New Mexico National Guard will be accepted by Gov A W Hockenhull shortly reported at the State House today. Who will succeed Wood is not known. Capt R L Thornton Col Clyde Ely and Vincent Jaeger are mentioned as possibilities. Governor Hockenhull had no comment on the report that Wood's resignation was forthcoming. General Wood returned after several months in a New York hospital for operations. It was reported pressure was brought to bear to replace him with a Democrat. The Governor has made no move but the report says he has made up his mind to act. Wood tendered his resignation to be accepted at the Governor's pleasure.

Outlaw Trio Flees Texas Prison After Shootout

Three desperate killers blasted from the death house at Texas State Prison near Huntsville on July 23. Raymond Hamilton Joe Palmer and Blackie Thompson led the escape after taking guards hostage and using a wall ladder. One companion Whitey Walker was killed attempting escape. Frazier led the break from death house while guard Brazil was forced inside. Texas Rangers and federal officers hunted across Texas Oklahoma and Louisiana.

Four Infantile Paralysis Cases Reported in Silver City

Four infantile paralysis cases have appeared since Saturday in Silver City New Mexico with four children under five in three Spanish American families and one Anglo family. An adult sleeping sickness case was also reported. Health officer Dr N D Frazin ordered closing of picture shows churches private and public summer schools for children under 16 and discouraged gatherings of children five to 16 and use of the public swimming pool to contain the outbreak.

Scattered Showers Do Little to Cut Fire Hazard

Albuquerque reports scattered showers across New Mexico and Arizona National Forests in the 10 days ending Friday, with 48 fire guards on New Mexico forests and 56 on Arizona. Fires totaled 58 on New Mexico forests covering 181 acres, and 157 fires in Arizona burning 7,267 acres, 6,230 on the Tonto. Since January 1, NM forests saw 21,386 fires burn 12,182 acres while Arizona saw 604 fires burn 15,839 acres.

Wickman Appeal Will Be Filed Tomorrow in Santa Fe

Records in the Wickman case likely will be filed tomorrow in the New Mexico Supreme Court at Santa Fe. District Judge M A Otero Jr may sign the records today at Tierra Amarilla where he is holding court after presiding over the Wickman trial several months ago.

Unregistered Still Seized Near Roswell

Fred S. Reddick aided by Sam McCue and Tom Jernigan seized an unregistered 50 gallon still 350 gallons of mash and five gallons of whiskey about 25 miles southwest of Roswell. Millard F. Fox and Lawrence B. Kincannon were bound over to federal court after a preliminary hearing and jailed in default of bond. Mrs Kincannon released on own bond while Kincannon failed to post 1250 bond on illicit whiskey charge.

Albuquerque discussion on regulations for 17 000 600 acres of public domain in New Mexico to be considered by Cattle Growers Wool Growers and Southwestern Conservation League committees. Proposed rules to be presented to a Department of Interior committee at a hearing late August or early fall.
