A Paris criminal court prisoner shot two guards and took the presiding judge and a prosecutor hostage during an escape attempt. The two court officials were later found unharmed and tied to a getaway car’s steering wheel. A woman posing as a lawyer reportedly brought a grenade and handed a pistol to the prisoner, allegedly his wife.
President Ford announced his candidacy for the 1976 election from the White House, pledging an open campaign and to serve all Americans. Ronald Reagan reportedly moves to challenge Ford for the Republican nomination, with a formal committee to follow.
After a March to October timeline the Chaves County Grand Jury has essentially finished its investigation into the district attorney's office following the Morgan arrest warrants. Dist. Judge Paul Snead and Asst. Atty. Gen. Jay Rosenthal say most duties are done with only a few items dangling.

Unemployment rates in Chaves County show a five month trend with May at 6.4 percent, April 6.1 percent, February peak 7.2 percent, while statewide May rate climbs to 8.3 percent and national average hits 9.2 percent. Officials cite seasonal effects and national recession as factors.
