A Fourth of July celebration lights the Roswell sky as residents contribute to the nation’s 198th birthday. The event was photographed in northeast Roswell at the E. B. Neff residence on Hermosa Drive.
A House committee approved a Watergate inspired election reform bill setting limits on contributions and campaign spending while creating new enforcement and disclosure rules. The measure mirrors Senate language and targets campaign finance practices nationwide.
The prosecution rests its case in the Plumbers trial involving John Ehrlichman and three others accused of plotting the 1971 break in at Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist Dr. Lewis Fielding. Ehrlichman faces additional charges for lying to a grand jury and the FBI.
A 350 expected statement to U S District Judge Gesell says he had no information on defendants guilt or innocence. Testimony indicated Kissinger was named in derogatory material Elisberg released after the Pentagon papers. Gesell set a Monday hearing on the Kissinger subpoena requiring defense lawyers to reveal expected Kissinger testimony. Kissinger travels in Europe to brief NATO allies on Nixon's Moscow visit.
About 350 members from Roswell High School classes of 1963 1964 and 1965 gather this weekend. Activities include registration at Roswell Inn tonight a pool party Saturday noon to five and a Saturday night buffet with speeches from class presidents.
Completion nears for a new Mountain Bell facility addition at 311 N Richardson Ave. The $1.5 million masonry building with buff brick will yield 14 800 square feet of new operating space and house extra equipment, Roswell manager Ted Spurlin said.

The 14 800 square foot masonry site at 311 N Richardson will house new equipment and staff to support long distance and local service with plans for conference rooms a parking lot and space for the Telephone Pioneers. The project revamps parts of the older facility and underpins future demand for telephone service for both existing and new subscribers.
President Nixon faced a permanent blood clot in his left leg that doctors warned could be fatal if it broke loose. Dr. Walter R. Tkach said the clot is fixed to a vein wall and unlikely to travel to heart or lungs, and noted Nixon chose to continue travel despite the risk.
A blaze at the Good Shepherd Mission on 412 E Mathews St caused heavy roof and attic damage with interior water intrusion. Fire officials also cited nine grass fires from 8:45 p m Thursday to 2 19 a m today linked to fireworks across vacant lots and fields. No injuries reported in fireworks incidents or Thursday traffic accidents in the city or county.
A 71-year-old Ruidoso resident with heart trouble shot and killed two of three youths who broke into his home. The dead were Thomas Sanders 23 of Mesilla Park and Anthony Schlitz 21 of Tempe. a third suspect, James Lowell Carmichael 23 of Mesa, Ariz., fled. Police say the burglary occurred around 7:30 p.m. and the resident retrieved a .45 automatic.
Hickman told deputies he fired at three men during a home invasion after seeing one with his wife. His wife said she did not struggle with the men. Hickman, who has heart trouble, appeared to respond to the incident, and one assailant fled. He faces a magistrate hearing in Ruidoso.
Sgt Eugene Zacniewski and Andy Robles named co chairmen of the 1974 Eastern New Mexico State Fair Parade in Roswell. Parade on Sept 24 begins at 10 am with theme Growth Can Be Fun. fair runs Sept 24–28 at the Roswell fairgrounds. Jaycees president Paul Herring urged community participation.
