Communists Fire on Tachens as U S Fleet Discusses Evacuation

Communist guns on captured Yikiangshan fired toward the Tachens as the U S 7th Fleet weighed orders to evacuate the Tachens north of Formosa. Navy officials and Chinese Nationalists reported shells landing in the sea and planned redeployments around Quemoy and Matsu.

Army secretary warns on small wars in House hearing

Secretary Stevens told the House Armed Services Committee the Army must guard against small wars and creeping expansion amid reduced manpower and funds. Hero Nadine Salcido Paralyzed by Car Crash

Three year old Nadine Salcido was in St. Marys Hospital with a broken hip after being struck by a 1951 Chevrolet sedan at 11 35 am yesterday on South Holland Avenue near her home 509 8 S Holland Ave. Cecil W. McCann 19 driver was cited for reckless driving. The child was knocked 33 feet then dragged 58 feet as the car skidded 91 feet before stopping. Police report says she was resting easy.

City School Board Election Set for Tomorrow

Election for one school board member tomorrow with two candidates Byron B White and J C Burkhead. Polls open 8 a m to 7 p m. South side voters use Missouri Avenue School north side use Washington Elementary. Roswell District voters eligible. Last election in 1953 drew about 260 voters.

Benson Sees Cotton Exports Rising This Year

Hutchins Sentenced 1 to 10 Years in Slaying Case

James William Hutchins, a 25 year old airman, was convicted of manslaughter in the April death of Bruce Weibel, a 32 year old Dallas truck driver. The jury accepted self defense claims and he faces a one to ten year term. Hutchins fled his post to be with his wife and was arrested in Oklahoma after the slaying.
