President Coolidge orders probe into Teapot Dome leases

Washington Jan 26 President Coolidge directs Interior to probe naval oil reserve leases for possible annulment following Senate Teapot Dome inquiries. A full statement of the President's views will come after facts are gathered. Former Secretary Fall is under medical care amid questions about sworn testimony and money received from Doheny and Zepely. Senator Smoot doubts sworn testimony was essential.

Illinois lawyer admits murder of two people

Warren J. Lincoln an eccentric attorney and gardener confessed murdering his wife and brother in law Byron Shoup and led police to a city dump where a concrete block with the two heads imbedded was found. He said he decapitated the bodies and poured concrete over them. Bodies' fate remains unknown. Thirty are dead, two missing and eight injured from a Berar Clinch coal mine explosion with about 350 workers underground.

Colonel Billie Mayfield, publisher of Mayfield's Weekly in Columbus Texas, was found guilty of criminal libel against State Representative Joseph V. Frank. He was fined $500 and costs and agreed to publish a retraction of the article.

Validity Texas auto tax to be decided by high courts

In Waco on January 26 the state case of A. R. Hudson et al appellees questions the new auto tax. Agreement will certify the issue to the state supreme court for decision in the tenth court of civil appeals. Hamilton county has no interest to authorize relief sought in the injunction. A similar case will be heard next at Groesbeck.

Huntsville Executions Delayed Await Warden Clash

Austin reports no further reprieve will be asked for five inmates slated for execution in Huntsville on February 8. R F Coleman has resigned. Norman Speer, acting warden and Coleman’s assistant, has not objected to the planned executions. A new warden is expected to be appointed soon, with Speer to officiate in the interim if needed.
