Washington guidance indicates the United States will probably not accept the Allied invitation to join the Genoa economic conference. Officials say the decision keeps options open for participation in any future conference.
In Independence Missouri Zedrick Byrd a negro is killed and George Barton an Independence police officer is critically wounded in a gun duel. Barton suspected Byrd planned a robbery and attempted to arrest him. The incident follows other local scenes of distress and shows tense public curiosity. Also noted is the seven months old daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas Ogas who died and was buried in South Park.
Eighteen states are organized for beer and light wines in the upcoming congressional elections. Fred W. Marcolin, organizer of the association against the prohibition amendment, lists Ohio, Maryland, Texas, New Jersey, Michigan and Illinois as battlegrounds where the fiercest fights will occur. Speakers tour nationwide to promote the campaign.
J P Wilby of Mankato Minnesota, an expert sugar beet grower, spent a month in Roswell. He praised the climate and people, said he would return to spend next winter there, and noted beets could yield heavier tonnage with proper acreage and crop rotation. He also commended local farming and the Chamber of Commerce for information on beet growing.
Three lake freighters were trapped in an ice jam on Lake Michigan near the Chicago river mouth. A brisk northeaster drove ice against their hulls and passengers joined crews aboard awaiting rescue. Later a wind shift allowed the ships to move toward their destinations.
The Civil Service Commission announces an open competitive examination to be held on February 14 1922 for Forest and Field Clerk positions. Apply for blanks and information to the secretary local civil service board at the Post Office.
The Ladies of the First Presbyterian Church will hold a cooked food sale on Saturday at the N. B. Wright Produce Store on North Main Street. Proceeds support church activities.
Pope Benedict's remains were interred in a solemn ceremony at St. Peter's with cardinals clergy diplomats and nobles present. The cypress coffin lay within a zinc coffin and chestnut case inside a sarcophagus while medals and a parchment of his reign were placed in the coffin. A white veil covered the pontiff's face as a vast crowd gathered outside.
International health lecturer Dr Charles E Barker will present free talks in Roswell on February 9 under Rotary auspices. Topics include A Mother's Relation to Her Daughter and A Father's Responsibility to His Son, with student and club addresses on How to Make the Most Out of Life and What is Rotary.

Washington January 26 charges claim there is an organized movement to obtain ex soldiers as witnesses testifying about alleged illegal hangings and killings in the A E F before a senate committee investigating the matter.
Roswell was designated on the Lee Highway yesterday at a Chattanooga convention. The highway plan was praised for logical permanent routing and funded organization. Officials say the Roswell route from Clovig to Roswell will place the city on a major transcontinental route, boosting long term tourism.
Fires in Brooklyn drove ten families from their homes amid zero weather. Firefighters struggled as bitter cold hampered efforts to contain the blaze threatening a dry dock and diverting much of the Brooklyn apparatus to the scene.
