Rome, Italy, Jan 25. Efforts to choose the Pope outside Italian cardinals are under way in a formal campaign, Popolo Romana says a German may succeed the late Benedict. The sacred college set the Pope's funeral for tomorrow at 3 30 p m.

Washington January 25 Powerful forces seek to block the conference from endorsing Henry Ford Muscle Shoals canalization and the farm bloc. Fertilizer trusts and big interests oppose Muscle Shoals, Atlantic coast states oppose canalization, administration forces oppose the farm bloc. Leaders expect to press for endorsement in the relief program.
Houston police launched a city wide dragnet in search of a negro suspected of criminal assault on a young white girl last night. A score of negroes were arrested and brought in for identification as the search continued.
In Austin a bus driver R. V W. Smith was killed when a train hit his bus at a grade crossing. He was alone in the vehicle. In Washington the health department reports a rise in influenza with 274 new cases across fifteen states in the last week.
