Rally for broader gun buyer background checks at gun shows

In Santa Fe a rally outside the Capitol drew 100 gun safety advocates and a 12 year old duck hunter with Santa Fe police chief urging lawmakers to add background checks for private gun show purchases to the session agenda. Supporters say the measure reduces gun violence while opponents warn of rights restrictions. The governor has not decided, and past bills stalled in the Senate.

ILEA Celebrates 4000th Student At Roswell Reception

Roswell's International Law Enforcement Academy marked its 4000th student during a Wednesday night reception at the Holiday Inn. Delegates from El Salvador, Panama, and Guatemala attended the academy's 15th session, welcomed by community leaders and officials. U.S. Sen. Tom Udall delivered a recorded video message to the students.

Group threatens to sue over river flows

Western environmental group WildEarth Guardians warned Colorado it plans to sue over water management of the Rio Grande at the New Mexico border. They cite a two month flow review showing flood irrigation wastes Colorado snowmelt, leaving little water for downstream users and endangered species, potentially violating the Endangered Species Act. Carolyn Tyler of the Colorado Attorney General's Office said the notice was received and is under review.

Navajo gambling compact faces opposition from New Mexico tribes

In Santa Fe, Laguna and Acoma pueblos and the Jicarilla Apache Nation opposed a proposed Navajo Nation gambling compact that would allow three new Las Vegas style casinos over 15 years, arguing it would dilute the regional market and strain tribal services.

Snowstorm grounds flights and shutters schools across Northeast

A major snowstorm blanketed the Northeast from Kentucky to New England, halting flights, closing schools including Boston and Philadelphia, and stranding roads with up to 18 inches of snow. The storm caused at least one death and prompted investigations into several weather-related incidents along the I-95 corridor.
