Thompson bill seeks $5 million for city storm drainage relief

Roswell Sen. R E Thompson introduces a $5 million state grant program to aid cities like Albuquerque Clovis Deming and Las Cruces with major storm drainage on key roads. Each city could receive up to $1 million. The measure accompanies other Thompson bills on juror pay tax rebates and business tax credits.

Roswell OWRT Roswell Test Facility to Close by July 1

An OWRT official said the Roswell Test Facility, located five miles east of Roswell, will close by July 1 due to lack of funds. The plant employs 21 people, with 20 placed with Burns and Roe Construction. A meeting with state engineer Steve Reynolds was scheduled to explore alternatives, though no definite plan exists.

Apodaca appoints Baca Pena to crime prevention panel

Gov. Apodaca named former Albuquerque Councilman Ray Baca and Grants businessman Eddie Pena to the Organized Crime Prevention Commission. Roswell Daily Record publisher Robert Beck was reappointed for a four year term. Baca, Pena and Beck are Republicans. Baca is a former police lieutenant and state convention delegate. Pena runs a Grants cable station and ranches north of Grants, serving on the Grants Board of Education.

Blind man reads braille faster with brain plugged computer

Craig a 33 year old Ogden Utah student who has been blind for a decade reads braille five times faster using a brain plugged computer and a camera linked to 64 implanted brain electrodes. The project from Utah and Western Ontario aims toward a glasses mounted device and estimates costs between 3000 and 5000 dollars.
