The 1975 legislature begins with opposition anticipated to curb revenues to the state general fund. Democrats hold solid majorities in both chambers, 51-19 in the house and 29-13 in the senate, with five new senators and 18 new house members. Five women will serve this session, a record for female legislators.
The 1975 New Mexico Legislature opens in Santa Fe with debates expected over finance and taxation as Gov. Jerry Apodaca pushes for higher funding and policy shifts. Proposed measures include a gross receipts tax exemption for drugs and medical services, reallocating tax shares to municipalities, and ceding state property tax portions to counties amid a projected $167.5 million cash balance and a $87.5 million surplus.
Three Arab gunmen seized ten hostages in a restroom at Orly Airport during a gun battle with police and an overnight siege. The Israeli El Al jet bound for Tel Aviv survived. two hostages and one gunman were wounded, and by noon some hostages were released as negotiators intervened.
The Legislative Interim Probate Code Committee approved the final probate code draft and a resolution by State Sen. R. E. Thompson to review the state Children’s Code. They propose repealing about 300 statutes and sending the bill to the 1976 legislature.
