A Little Joe II rocket launched unmanned Apollo hardware at White Sands in the final safety system test. The craft reached about 15 miles as stages burned out and three parachutes were seen, with officials calling the test a perfect sign and a step toward Cape Kennedy integration with Saturn rockets.
Lea County Sheriff Pannell named Lones Joshua Wynn, 42, of Harlan Kentucky as the victim of a hitchhike robbery in Hobbs. Wynn was shot in the shoulder while fleeing the robber and was treated at a local hospital.
In Lovington New Mexico a man later identified as Guy Wellman Holloway was shot by Carlsbad police and wounded while resisting arrest for questioning in a hitchhike shooting west of Hobbs. A rifle was found in his car and no charges had been filed. Also reported were state political and military notices from Santa Fe and Bangkok.
Base personnel Lt. George W. Greer of the 24th Bombardment Squadron and M Sgt Lyle P. Qually of the 812th Medical Group are named Officer of the Year and Airman of the Year by the Roswell Jaycees. The awards will be presented Saturday at the Jaycees service awards banquet at Roswell Inn with other honors to be announced. Public invited to the dinner and dance.
President Johnson told Independence, Missouri, that North Viet Nam blocks peace by thinking the United States will surrender its principles or allies. He joined Harry S. Truman to launch a peace center and urged keeping the door to peace wide open while closing aggression. He spoke for 190 million Americans and pressed for a peace with honor and justice that endures.
Seven people were hurt in two traffic accidents in Roswell. Allan McCullum of Worland Wyoming, 29, drove a car that hit a utility pole and was cited for driving while intoxicated. A noon collision at Second and Richardson left four with minor injuries, including Hubert McCoy and Evelyn Tydlaska.
State police and Humane Society officials described a Baltimore junkyard operation as a Dachau concentration camp for dogs after raiding the site and arresting dog dealer Lester J. Brown on 29 counts of cruelty. About 28 dogs were removed, one died, others were emaciated, and remaining animals were left at the yard. The crackdown targets a $50 million annual dog-dealing business.
Federal authorities held 36 year old painter Jack E. Applegate on aid and abetment charges in a $6 250 bank robbery at Gallup. Arrested in Las Vegas at a bus station by the FBI. Bond set at 50000. No decision on New Mexico return yet.
Secretary McNamara told a joint Senate hearing that U S plans include a massive application of firepower in Vietnam and that budgeting assumes fighting will continue through June 1967. He warned more forces may be deployed if the Communists expand operations.
Two men died and four were hurt in a two car head-on crash on U S 380 about 30 miles east of Roswell. Clyde Browning 81 Lovington and Robert McPherson 34 Midland died on arrival. Driver Browning was 50 and 37 year old William Jetton Midland survived with injuries.
AP Special Correspondent John M. Hightower reports fading prospects for early peace talks in the Vietnam War as President Johnson ends a public peace push without North Vietnam accepting terms. Ambassador Harriman and Secretary Rusk returned from the Far East, prompting planned high level consultations on military and diplomatic strategy next week. The key decisions involve resuming bombing of North Vietnam and possible broader escalation.
Roswell Mayor Gail Harris urges residents to attend a pre planning session in Ruidoso Friday to push U S 70 designation on the interstate system. Sponsored by the Roswell Chamber of Commerce Highway Committee with the New Mexico State Highway Department the 10 a m meeting at Chaparral Motor Hotel will bring chamber managers highway committee members and city officials together to map plans with NM State Highway Commission Chairman John Sudderth.
The de activation of Walker Air Force Base will remove over 3 000 students from Chaves County and Roswell City Schools. Walker Elementary will certainly close on base and officials expect adjustments in teaching centers after the base closes with no immediate federal or state funding cuts.
