Frigid temperatures and clear skies spread from the Rockies to the Midwest and Gulf states as subzero winds impact cities from Santa Fe to Dallas. Record lows hit multiple Texas towns while Montana, Denver and Chicago report extreme cold and transportation disruptions.
In Las Vegas New Mexico January 19 Republican party workers prepared to copy San Miguel county registration lists after a peremptory writ of mandamus by District Judge David Chavez Jr. ordered the county clerk to permit copying. Republicans plan to copy in every county and said they are ready to go to court if needed.
District court juries returned not guilty verdicts on both charges that Cort Marley stole one head of cattle from D. R. Britt in June 1937. Marley, a Roswell stockman, had earlier been acquitted of stealing sheep from Oscar White. Assistant district attorneys Roy Anderson and G L Reese led the state, while L O Fullen and G T Watts defended Marley. The panel included Lyle Moots and others with alternate C C Bogard.
State tourist bureau director Joseph Bursey announced 16 New Mexico chambers of commerce will sponsor tourist schools in February to April. The training aims to boost tourist stays, with towns including Tucumcari, Clovis, Alamogordo, Portales, Artesia, Roswell, Carlsbad, Las Cruces, Deming, Lordsburg, Silver City, Grants, Gallup, Farmington and Aztec. Coronado Cuarto Centennial expected to lift traffic to 2,000,000 cars and 5,400,000 people. Claude Simpson of Roswell Chamber said schools will expand and include all tourism contact workers.
Eastern New Mexico Area Boy Scout Council expects about 250 attendees, including 100 from out of town, at the Woman's Club banquet in Roswell tonight at 6 30. Donald W. MacKay will preside. Dr. W S Dando of Carlsbad delivers the principal address on Tom Dick and Harry. executive board meet at 3 and annual business meeting at 5 to elect officers.
Mexico City reports two famed matadors Lorenzo Garza and El Soldado fined 2000 Pesos each by the federal district government for shameful conduct after last Sunday's bull fights. Crowds jeered, the matadors taunted them and Garza was gored in the final performance, sidelined for about two weeks. Also noted is Hugh Corby Fox, US embassy bull-fighting secretary, leaving diplomacy for banking. Ambassador Danies declined comment.
Representative Tabor challenged an administration plan allowing $186.58 million in defense spending to be approved without raising this year's deficit. He announced opposition to contracts committing Congress to future outlays before funding, a method used in recent defense appropriation bills.
In Frisco Open golf 32 players qualified for the match play at Lake Merced after 36 holes. William Lawson Little led with 139, earning $325, to face Willie Goggin in the first round. Former Open winners Metz McSpaden Demaret Wood also qualified from the par 72 course.
Federal employees in Roswell formed a permanent organization last night at the Chamber of Commerce. Geneva Short of Public Welfare was elected president with James D. Hearn of the Roswell post office as vice president and Ruth Penfield of the Social Security Board as secretary-treasurer. Will Robinson demonstrated his Know Your New Mexico program.
A downtown blaze at 106-12 East Second Street caused about 8100 in damage to the Daniel Furniture Company warehouse with 4600 to the building and 3500 to inventory. No insurance on the structure, fire under control after near zero temperatures. Authorities suspect defective wiring or a cigarette.
Washington reports Senator William E. Borah of Idaho in a deep coma after a cerebral hemorrhage. Physicians say he is failing rapidly with death described as minutes to hours away. Wife Mrs Borah clings to hope as friends and colleagues await updates from Borah's apartment and hospital.
Mrs J Louis Comiskey vows to keep the Comiskey name with the Chicago White Sox. The First National Bank, trustee for the estate of her husband who died last summer, petitioned the probate court for permission to sell the American League club, triggering opposition to the sale.

Light snowfall followed by clearing skies in the central and southern states while the north grows cloudy. The upper Mississippi valley sees light snow and the extreme Northwest rain or snow. Temperatures rise in the north but stay below zero from Arkansas to Missouri and a hard freeze grips the Gulf coast. Pecos valley fair tonight with lows 10 to 15 degrees tomorrow morning. Roswell travel faces subnormal temps but no severe weather.
Continental Air Lines announced that the Civil Aeronautics Authority approved extending routes to Roswell Hobbs and Carlsbad New Mexico. Albuquerque officials said service could begin within a month or two with six to ten passenger ships daily. The Roswell route marks major air mail and express access for the east side business community and ends a decade long drive by the Chamber of Commerce.
Santa Fe January 19 The state highway commission was to open bids on five projects including the Railroad Canyon route on U S 85 between Raton and the Colorado line. About 14 contractors planned to bid the Raton job estimated near 300000 dollars. Other projects include an overpass at Tucumcari a timber bridge on U S 84 between Santa Rosa and Fort Sumner blacktop work at Antonio and Carrizozo and base course surfacing of 243 miles of 84 north of Fort Sumner.
Five persons perished in a small frame house fire in Austin Texas early today. Victims named Tom Ruiz Joe Hernandez Peter Hernandez Edmundo Guzman and Dolores Guzman died or were fatally injured with Guzman dying hours later in hospital. Fire chief said bodies were found in doorway and rooms. fire likely started near a wood heater. Mrs Ruiz and two daughters escaped.
Washington January 19 senators clash over Wheeler Howard Indian re organization act. Senator Chavez attacks U S Indian service staff on the Navajo reservation and accuses Collier of mismanaging Indians while Fra zer denounces old tribal forms. They seek amendments exempting tribes voting against the act as King blocks action.
Colorado shows generally fair conditions tonight and over the weekend with warmer Saturday across east and north regions. Arizona expects fair skies with slightly colder night areas in the northeast and north central, warming on Saturday. New Mexico forecasts fair conditions, colder tonight west of the continental divide, with rising temperatures Saturday. WFST Texas notes continued cold tonight with a rise in temperature Saturday.
