Germany Britain and Norway report new merchant-ship losses from mines and torpedoes as a Danish vessel wrecks on Norway's coast. Norway suffers two sinkings, with 14 crew missing from the Faerheim, Enid’s crew saved, and the August Thyssen sinking near the Aland Islands after a mine strike while carrying iron ore from Sweden.
Santa Fe New Mexico January 18. Al S. Roughton director of the state drivers license division says Silver City officials failed to follow regulations. He notes forms should be remitted daily after ten or more applications and accuses the city of accumulating forms for a week or more. He cites that 6 520 forms were furnished versus 2 635 remittances and says supplies are being sent as needed.
Five men died and several injured as rapid explosions rocked the royal gunpowder works at Waltham Abbey England. Police said the blasts were accidental with no enemy action. A mushroom cloud and shattered windows followed as fire brigades battled flames.
Federal agents raid multiple locations and arrest 18 members of the Christian Front conspiracy in New York. Ringleaders named are John F Cassidy and William G Bishop as authorities seize guns ammunition bombs and other armaments amid the alleged plot to overthrow the government and attack congressmen and army forts.
Washington January 18 New Deal strategists said the Ohio Democrats pledged Roosevelt delegates to Vic Donahey to back a plan giving the president power to name the 1940 Republican nominee if he did not seek a third term. Analysts doubt orchestrating the next convention, but 52 Ohio delegates could link a chain of delegations.
Owen Campbell sues for 22500 damages in a water pollution case heard in district court on a change of venue from Eddy county. Malco Refiners Inc Continental Oil Co and City of Artesia plus estate administrator named as defendants. Campbell seeks 20000 actual 2500 exemplary damages and an injunction preventing discharge of waters and refuse onto his land.
Beaumont, Texas, January 18. Dr. W C Welch a chiropractor was sentenced to 15 years for kidnapping 11 year old neighbor Irwin Mingle of Port Arthur and demanding 15000 in ransom. The boy escaped and Welch blamed the jury’s disbelief in his powers of divine healing.
Louisiana voters gave a strong lead to Governor Earl K. Long but failed to produce an absolute majority in the Democratic primary. Incomplete returns show Long at 161,629 to Jones 109,619 with Noe Morrison and Moseley trailing, pointing to a likely February 20 runoff. Eugene Stanley ran ahead of administration rivals for state attorney general, signaling a potential counterweight to past admin tactics.
The Associated Press reports a cold outbreak across New Mexico with highs near 14 to 22 degrees and light snowfall in eastern counties. Roswell fell to 14 above, Clovis to five, Hobbs to six, Carlsbad to 20, while Albuquerque noted a broad cold spell eastward. A four motor Boeing flying fortress paused in Albuquerque en route San Diego to Dayton. Santa Fe reached 14 at 7 am then warmed. The system foresees colder conditions in southeast and northwest. Across the U S a brutal freeze extended from the northern Rockies to Indiana with Wisconsin down to 20 below.
Turkey’s price for keeping the Dardanelles open and aiding the Allies was reported as at least 340 million dollars in loans and credits. Anglo French loans totaling about 175 million dollars were announced, with additional commitments including currency stabilization, arms and ammunition funding, mineral resource development, and a Karabak steel mill project.
Cornelius McCraw, 25, was fatally shot at the Berry Heine farm in East Grand Plains at 11:30 AM. It appears an accidental self-inflicted wound from a .22 rifle during a duck hunt. An inquest was set for 3 PM before J. P. Pat O Neill. Ballard Funeral Home handling arrangements. He leaves parents Mr and Mrs C T McCraw and six brothers and one sister.
The jury in Cort Marley’s trial for stealing two cows from D. R. Britt in June 1937 received the case at noon. No verdict was returned by press time. Marley had been previously acquitted of sheep theft from Oscar White. A cow was examined near the courthouse to determine its age. State represented by G. L. Reese Sr. and Marley by L. O. Fullen and G. T. Watts.
In a North campaign the Finns claim a robust advance of 28 miles against Soviet forces and report downing 11 enemy aircraft. The lighter battlefront updates follow persistent skirmishes across the border region, with the scale of Polish and Allied involvement not specified.
Chairman Vinson of the House Naval Committee proposed a 500 million dollar cut in the fleet expansion bill. He would reduce total tonnage from 490000 to 218000 while keeping three aircraft carriers and 34 submarines, with discretionary ship counts left to the Navy. He noted possible four 27500 ton cruisers as an alternative to the current 10000 ton limit and cited Germany's pocket battleships.
In Washington on January 18 Senator Vandenberg urged President Roosevelt to inform Congress whether Russia fulfilled pledges tied to American recognition in 1933. He proposed a report on public interest. Senator Wheeler supported more Finnish credit while Herbert Hoover backed non military aid. Garner reportedly opposed further loans, citing neutrality and risk of entanglements. The National Association of Manufacturers warned such aid could provoke reprisals and war. Meanwhile Finnish forces claimed gains in Lapland, pushing Russians back 28 miles in Salla and downing 11 planes as the Soviet retreat continued toward the eastern border.
Two men will be surprised and honored at the Eastern New Mexico Area Boy Scout Council banquet at Roswell Women's Club tomorrow night. They will receive the Silver Beaver award for distinguished service to boyhood. The event expects over 100 out of town and 150 Roswell attendees, with Dr. W. S. Dando delivering the principal address and Donald W. MacKay presiding. Tickets are available from the Boy Scout office, troop chairmen, or Phil Carter, Aubrey Gregg, H. P. Garrett, and Oscar Greene.
