London AP report notes Sir Winston Churchill, age 90, weakening after cerebral thrombosis. A morning bulletin from his physician Lord Moran said he had a restful night but was a little weaker, with no other changes. Family members remained at his bedside.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was struck in the right temple and kicked in the groin by a man wearing a States Right Party uniform as King and 11 other Negroes registered at a Selma hotel. The assailant Jim Robbins was arrested and jailed. Public Safety Director Wilson Baker restrained the attacker. Several civil rights leaders accompanied King including Ralph Abernathy Fred Shuttlesworth Andrew Young and Bernard Lee.
President Johnson told Congress the United States is stronger militarily than any peacetime era and outlined a $49 billion defense budget a reduction from current levels. He unveiled three major new weapons including the Poseidon missile for Polaris submarines and promised continued missile growth and tech R&D.

Whitmire and relatives from Liberty Texas in the first crash and Mrs Martha Spencer and her son Jody from Wichita Kansas in the second. Investigations cited lighting problems for the Whitmire vehicle and a rear collision with a semi as the cause of the fatalities.
