Vernon Norman Davenport failed another escape from the Oklahoma reformatory as two Vernon hunters and a deputy helped capture him near Red River. Davenport's gunfire wounded no one. his capture followed a confrontation after a road chase and a return to San Francisco for transport to the Oklahoma facility.
President Eisenhower plans to press Congress to enact amendments he says will liberalize the Taft Hartley Act and give the Republican record a middle of the road image. He signals willing compromises but vows to turn up pressure through a White House appeal to the country.
At the National Western Stock Show in Denver, cattle sale activity grows with bulls selling up to 2500 each. Nearly 1800 Hereford bulls remain in pens as 209 Hereford bulls and 68 females go to auction. Texans win rodeo events as Marshall Patton and Spec McLaughlin claim firsts in steer wrestling and Brahma bull riding.
President Eisenhower urged Congress to fund a government re insurance program with 25 million dollars to back private health plans and a five year drive to rehabilitate 660000 disabled Americans. He defended private care, warned against socialized medicine, and called for broader health facilities and simplified grants for states.
Indian Lt. Gen. K S Thimayya told the UN Command that releasing unrepatriated POWs before fate is decided would breach the Korean armistice. Allies plan to free about 22 000 anti Red POWs as civilians by Saturday, UNC says. Talks for a peace conference stalled with secretaries deadlocked again.
In Roswell Chaves County residents raised over 25 thousand dollars in a 20 hour KSWS TV telethon sponsored by the Lions Club led by Wally Reed. Support came from Lions Lionesses state patrol city police Walker Air Force Base and many civic groups with KSWS staff publisher Robert Beck and Gov. Ed Mechem among those appearing.
City Manager C. M. Woodbury announced at 9:45 a.m. that he had not yet received a copy of the auditor's report. The report, to be sent to state comptroller Ed Hartman, was due for release early this week. It reportedly shows a $4,037.22 shortage in the parking meter fund for Oct 1 to Dec 31, 1953.
Tonight observers in the East can watch a total lunar eclipse beginning around 6:40 p.m. with the darkest phase near 9:17 p.m. EST. Naked-eye dimming starts about 7:50 p.m., ends around 12:24 a.m., with partial visibility until 11:14 p.m.

Sen. Ellender of Louisiana said he will ask Secretary Benson to reveal who suggested President Eisenhower’s farm program and why. The inquiry comes as Ellender, senior Democrat on the Senate Agriculture Committee, invited Benson to brief the panel on the administration plan. The plan proposes flexible supports for most crops at 75 to 90 percent of parity, replacing the current rigid 90 percent for basic crops with tobacco exception. Ellender questioned the contrasts in the proposal noting basic crops approved by law.
Roswell residents Delilah Russell and Elizabeth Morris suffered injuries when their car overturned on U S 380, 22 miles west of Tatum. Russell, 33, an expectant mother, had cuts and back injuries. Morris, also 33, hip fracture. Shirley Patterson, 10, cut and bruised. All were taken to St. Marys Hospital in Roswell. The crash occurred about 2 15 p.m when Russell turned to watch Morris place Shirley in the back seat, causing the vehicle to leave the highway and overturn.
The Chamber of Commerce schedules six identical sessions for stockholders to hear a work program update and offer Roswell and Chaves county suggestions. Over 700 stockholders assigned to sessions at 10 am 2 pm and 7 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday, with balloting closing Tuesday at 10 am and counting at 11 am by three judges. Directors to elect officers Friday.
Twelve New Mexico servicemen return from the Far East aboard two transports this week. On the USNS Gen. Simon B. Buckner, four men from Hobbs Roswell Mesilla Park Albuquerque Tucumcari and Dexter are listed. On the USNS Frederick Funston four more from Belen Santa Fe Hobbs and Albuquerque arrive Wednesday, bringing the total to twelve.
The Associated Press notes four traffic deaths in New Mexico over the weekend, elevating the year’s toll to 23. Victims include six year old Georgia Elaine Romero of Santa Fe who died after a rear door opened on a car driven by Rafael Garcia of Santa Fe on U S Highway 85 near Las Vegas. Guillermo Abeyta and his wife, both 23, of Ledoux died in a head on crash with Jose B. Padilla of Santa Fe in Mora. Clemente Chavez, 38, of Veguita was struck on State Road 47 by Nicholas Mascarenas, also of Veguita, who was jailed in Socorro.
Licenses issued Saturday to Burton Edward Duncan and Billye Frances Mercer both of Lubbock and Ennis Clyde Gavlon and June Besing both of Hobbs.
Seven persons die and three are critically injured when a car carrying six youths returning from a high school dance crosses the center line on U S Highway 66 east of Azusa. Killed are Harlan Lamb 20 K Roger Frechette 22 Cory McNiel 16 Peggy Vermes 17 Wilma Burian 18 all of Azusa Emma Jo Bratton 18 Glendora and M M Caullay 52 Pasadena driver of the other car. Critically injured in Caullay s car are Marion 50 Jeanie White 60 and Elizabeth Rossing 63 Pasadena.
In Kansas City Kansas a 2 year old boy locked himself in a bathroom. Mrs Donald E Martin county attorney and five of their seven children begged him for half an hour. The boy remained uncooperative until 8 year old Mike spilled jelly beans which caused the door to open.
A meeting in El Paso will set plans for U S border recruitment of Mexican farm workers. Don Larin of the Labor Department says the program should start soon after the collapse of the 12 year old Mexico recruitment treaty. Managers of labor reception centers and immigration officials will gather to design border processing.
State Sen. Henry Eager of Tucumcari says he would like to run for Congress if it avoids harming New Mexico Democratic unity. He plans to wait two years until his Senate term ends but won’t close the door this year if East Side candidates are seen as inevitable. Rep. Leroy Teague of Taos suggests a governing credo for the governor’s race as other lawmakers weigh bids.
