The Pecos Valley Librarians Association moved to change its fund from a scholarship to a loan fund at a Roswell Artesia meeting led by Doris Cox of Carlsbad. Roswell attendees heard Betty Lamb perform and two Artesia High seniors sang. Next meeting set for April 11 in Roswell.

A Scandinavian Airlines DC8 splashed into the Pacific during a landing attempt at Los Angeles International Airport. Brother Anthony Labianca an 18 year old monk is in good condition at an Espanola hospital with frost bitten feet after an overnight ordeal in a ravine near Abiquiu. He was hiking with two visitors to the Christ in the Desert Monastery when he separated from them and became trapped. A spokesman said he removed his shoes to aid climbing but could not escape. The Rev. Aelred Wall noted the others returned to report him missing. State Police and monastery workers searched until he was found around noon Monday. The monastery sits in a remote area along the Chama River about 13 miles northwest of Ghost Ranch Museum.
Sen. Fred Harris of Oklahoma was unanimously chosen as DNC chairman succeeding Lawrence F. O'Brien. O'Brien urged focusing on suburban voters and rebuilding the party from the bottom up while aiming to close a campaign deficit estimated at 9 to 12 million dollars.
Residents near 900 W First Street battle starling flocks by tethering helium balloons in trees to deter evening roosts. The balloons float ground level and keep birds away, with initial success reported as nightly balloon launches continue.
