Jury Selected in Carlton Murder Trial at Clovis

A Clovis district court panel of two women and ten men was chosen in one hour 25 minutes for the Dennis and Pearl Carlton murder trial. The Carltons face first degree murder charges in the Aug 18 Portales slaying of Elbert Muncy a 68 year old druggist found with multiple gunshot wounds. Dist Atty Morris Stagner may seek the death penalty and questioned jurors on death penalty views. Opening statements and testimony were to follow after venue transfer from Roosevelt County to Curry County with Judge Dee C Blythe presiding.

Balloon launch drifts off target from Roswell to Ardmore

A 3 million cubic foot polyethylene balloon launched from Roswell on Saturday missed its Dallas destination by about 200 miles and landed in the Lake Texoma region near Ardmore Oklahoma. The balloon, part of a five unit project to study cosmic and gamma rays and earth temperature, was recovered Saturday night. MIT and Naval Research Laboratory technicians and scientists assisted the launch.

Inaugural Day Counter March Approved for Washington

A spokesman for the National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam said the group has government approval for a counter march down Pennsylvania Avenue the day before Nixon’s oath. The parade route would run from the White House to the Capitol, opposite the presidential procession. GSA counsel Harry Van Cleve called the approval conditional.

Nixon names Shakespeare USIA director in New York

President elect Nixon names Frank Shakespeare CBS executive and former TV adviser as head of the U S Information Agency. Shakespeare will resign CBS Television Services and focus on promoting the United States abroad. Nixon leaves for Key Biscayne tonight to finalize inaugural address and plans a 15 minute speech.
