One Hundred Fifty Die In Roswell Opera House Fire

A catastrophic blaze at Boyertown's opera house during a charity event killed about 150 people and injured 75 as fear and stampede overwhelmed the crowd. Fire started from coal oil footlights. rapid spread trapped many on the second floor and in the basement. Bank and stores burned. total loss estimated at 75000 dollars. Local officials, state constabulary, and neighboring towns assisted in body removal and relief. Citizens urged forming a Roswell charity society led by women to aid the destitute and coordinate donations.

New York January 14 burglars visited artist Frederick Earle’s Monroee residence in Orange County. They stole or damaged paintings rugs and bric a brac valued over 25000. Earle had left for Italy three months earlier amid widely publicized domestic complications.
