The Roswell Jaycees will man the telephones for the Cerebral Palsy telethon over Saturday and Sunday. The event is spotlighted on page 8 and aims to raise funds for the charity.
Chaves County can continue to detain juveniles at the county jail as long as it pursues juvenile detention solutions and agrees to monthly inspections. The decision was announced at a county commission meeting by Jamie Katz, chief of Standards and Inspections.
Ralph Rainwater of southwestern New Mexico secures an agreed judgment against the Bureau of Land Management. The ruling requires BLM consultation with Rainwater and the state Land Office before decisions affecting mixed land ownership. He will pay $1,500 back grazing fees to June 1979, then standard rates, and a 10-year grazing permit is ordered if conditions stay normal.
Henry C. Vasquez was found guilty by a district court jury after about an hour of deliberation. Judge Stanley Frost overruled a defense motion, and Vasquez faces sentencing Thursday with an appeal planned by defense counsel.
City Public Works Director John McConvery predicted a water line tie-in would finish by today but backhoes and traffic remain. Roswell police sent a patrolman to the scene as lines of traffic stretched longer than Tuesday, with work continuing Monday night.
Tulsa radio host John Erling asked callers to vote one word Carter or Nixon on Nixon birthday. In 30 minutes 305 chose Nixon 256. 49 backed Carter. Florida Gov Bob Graham signed death warrants for Douglas Meeks and James Adams set for 7 am Feb 13 with appeals expected. Sperm whale noted as having the heaviest brain among living animals.
