Meeting to decide fate of center in city council session

The City Council will hold a special 5 p.m. Monday meeting to decide the fate of a proposed civic center after a Friday briefing with six councilors, the mayor, two architects and eight officials. Bids opened last Thursday pitched $2.4 million project costs, with Cornell Inc. of Clovis submitting $2,984,461. Architect Strain proposed options to reduce to about $2.767 million or $2.75 million with certain trims, while noting savings from cutting lights, partitions, and exhibit space. The Building and Lands Committee will meet 4 p.m. Monday to prepare for the council's 7 p.m. Thursday session.

State Police agent loses search and seizure suit

A New Mexico State Police agent in Roswell lost a civil rights suit filed by the Hinojos family of Carlsbad. U.S. District Judge James Park er ordered Agent Peter Darrell Kindig to pay $39,000 in compensatory damages and legal fees for entering the Hinojos home without a warrant or consent and seizing a television VCR and shampooer. The suit claimed violations of due process and unlawful search and seizure. Kindig declined comment.

Four named for Fifth Judicial District Nomination Commission

The final four were named Friday to the Fifth Judicial District Nominating Commission, bringing the total to 18. The panel will begin public comment Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. at the Chaves County Courthouse. Nominees include three bar-judges picks W T Martin Jr Melissa Sawyers Dick Blenden and Gov Gary Johnson appointee James C Manatt Jr. The commission will forward candidates to Gov Johnson for appointment.
