Russian Force In Crimea Smashes At The Germans

Soviet Izvestia reported Sevastopol garrison units advanced and smashed German outposts in Crimea, with the Black Sea fleet credited for its task. Other forces reportedly reached the Sea of Azov, cutting off Kerch, while Red army units near Kursk pushed forward. U.S. planes aided counterattacks on Leningrad, and Japanese activity around Batan was reported with limited gains.

Forty Thousand Japs Caught in Chinese Trap

The Chinese say about 40 000 Japanese troops are trapped on the plains between the Laotao and Liuyang rivers northeast of Changsha in Hunan province. A Chinese spokesman reports 30 000 Japanese casualties so far and that only about 30 000 of the original 100 000 have escaped toward Yochow to the north. The Japanese have retreated more than 10 miles from Hu Nan city as dispatches continue.

The Associated Press reported no information on this contract type from Army district engineers in Caddoa Colorado or Washington officials. Bids opened for an incinerator sewage disposal plant hangar and water tower with major runway and field facilities bid date set for January 12.

Oil Production Dips Nationally for Week End Jan 3

Daily crude oil output across the United States declined by 51,790 barrels to 4,029,700 for the week ending January 3, as reported by the Oil and Gas Journal. Texas rose by 11,500 to 1,494,500 barrels, while the Rocky Mountain states gained 640 to 112,260 barrels.

Additional Navy Recruiter Comes to Roswell Station

William Odle, chief boats mate of the U S Navy, arrives in Roswell to aid the local recruiting office led by Harold Beckwith. Odle, a 1912 enlistee, served on battleships, destroyers, and auxiliaries, commanded an armed guard on a Standard Oil ship, and spent four years on the China station including Yangtse River gunboats. Retired in 1939, he was recalled last month, moving here from San Francisco with his wife and son William Odle Jr who enrolled at Roswell High School.
