Funeral services listed for Mrs. Minnie Mabie in Roswell

Funeral services for Mrs. Minnie A. Mabie of Roswell, 76, who died Friday, will be held at Talmage Memorial Chapel at 2 30 this afternoon. A longtime Roswell resident since February 1908, she was active in First Baptist Church and WC T U. She leaves a husband Jay Mabie deceased in 1930, a son Milton Mabie, three daughters, siblings, six grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Interment at South Park.

Wavell Heads Allied Forces In The Far Pacific

The united Allied supreme command for the southwest Pacific was announced from Washington. General Sir Archibald Wavell will lead, with Maj. Gen. George H. Brett in charge of air operations and Admiral Thomas C. Hart commanding all naval forces in the area. Chiang Kai Shek named supreme commander of allied land and air forces in China and in Thailand and Indo China.

Railroad Spur Construction Near Roswell Underway

Construction of a 3 1/2 mile railroad spur from South Spring to the army air base site south of Roswell is expected to finish in about ten days. The project is being carried out by Sharp and Fellows, railroad contractors, after being awarded the contract by the Santa Fe railroad.

The Changsha battle escalates with hand to hand fighting at three gates. Chinese communique claims 10 Japanese charges repulsed and 6000 enemy casualties as Japanese planes bomb and supply troops. Chinese rear strikes disrupt lines as reports say 15,000 Japanese casualties and a great battle continues. Disguised Japanese troops at the east gate were annihilated amid ongoing efforts to capture the city. Between 30 and 40 American and British nationals are reported in Changsha, with Yale in China and a major hospital among American-funded sites.

School Vacation Ends Tomorrow at 619 Institute

Roswell boys and girls resume classes tomorrow after a two week Christmas vacation while Institute classes begin Wednesday. The 619 Institute cadets return Tuesday night from homes across the United States and abroad. Many international cadets spent the holidays with friends or relatives in the United States. Christmas furlough at the Institute lasted three weeks.

Soviet dispatches report German casualties at about 3,000 daily on the western Moscow front and say 100,000 plus encircled at Mozhaisk. The offensive pushes west. retreat routes include Borodino Vyazma and Smolensk. Boldin cites Kaluga capture after a 72 mile snow march. 45,000 Germans destroyed. Kaluga breached the Oka river. Fastest US airplane enters mass production P 47

Washington Jan 3 The Office for Emergency Management says the Republic P 47 is nearly ready for mass production. It features a 2000 horsepower engine a 12 foot propeller and a 41 foot wingspan. Armed with heavy armor and multiple guns the fighter will be built by Republic Aviation in an undisclosed plant as part of a broader shift to mass produce fewer fighter types and expand bomber output.

Air Base Bids To Be Opened Monday

Roswell air base bids for constructing an incinerator sewage disposal plant hangar and water tower will be opened Monday. Bids for flying field facilities including runways will be opened January 12. Work has begun on artesian wells at the site and on the railroad spur to the field.
