A Dallas drive-in grocery was closed by a counter clerk who announced inventory time and took all cash from the register. Two employees were locked in a rear room during the incident and remain under guard as officers investigate.
The New Year weekend traffic deaths totaled 399 from Friday 6 p.m. to midnight Sunday, with 69 fire fatalities and 106 other mishaps, for an overall toll of 574. California, Texas, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Illinois led with 20 plus deaths each. Nebraska, Nevada, Utah, and Vermont reported no fatalities.
Police Judge Henry S. Corzine extended the permit deadline for driver permits by 15 days due to a rush of applicants. The new deadline is 15 days after December 31 with no penalty, but Corzine warns that driving without a valid permit remains forbidden and penalties may follow for expired permits.
