New Mexico Senate OKs crime bill heading to governor

The public safety package HB 8, tightening penalties for fentanyl trafficking and vehicle theft and overhauling the criminal competency system, passed the Senate 38-3 and the House concurred. It now awaits Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham's signature with an April 11 deadline.

Lucero convicted in 2018 Roswell murder trial

A Roswell jury found Raymond Anthony Lucero guilty on one count of first-degree murder and four counts of child abuse after a four day trial in New Mexico’s 5th Judicial District. A sentencing hearing is set for March 26 and another firearm charge will be pursued separately.

New Mexico Senate backs higher royalty rate on top oil tracts

The Senate voted 21 to 15 to advance S B 23 raising the top oil and gas royalty from 20 to 25 percent on the most valuable Permian Basin state trust land. current leaseholders are exempt. Sponsored by Sen. George Munoz the bill aims to boost Land Grant Permanent Fund revenues by 50 to 84 million annually, potentially adding up to 2 billion by 2050, while critics warn it harms the oil industry and budget.
