The Bush Guinea and the Poor Gentleman of Bristol
In Bristol during west India trade days a seedy stranger known as the poor gentleman frequented the Bush Inn for a noon paper and brandy, never paying. The landlord John Weeks secretly saved the paper for him, treated him to a Christmas meal, and gave a guinea as a gift. The man vanished after the gesture, and Weeks later learned the guest was Thomas Coutts, head of Coutts & Co., rewarding Weeks’ kindness.
