Mob attack at jail leaves one dead four wounded in Cairo

Militiamen patrol the Alexander County Courthouse after a mob attacked the jail early this morning. Alexander Halliday was shot to death by deputy sheriffs and four others were wounded, two not part of the mob. Halliday died beside the courthouse steps in near freezing temperatures as authorities refused to remove the wounded or allow a physician inside. Coroner opened an investigation into Halliday’s death amid tensions from prior racial violence and ongoing mob threats.

Conger testified that he and his brother distributed six thousand dollars nine years earlier to shield the American Bridge Company, calling it blackmail.
