Will Purdy A D Jones and Joe J Lane were elected to the Roswell school board in a hard fought regular biennial election. Purdy the sole present board member on the ticket endorsed current policies while Jones and Lane campaigned against them. Purdy defeated Otto Johnson for a four year term and Jones Lane beat E G Minton and Carl McNally for six year terms. Holdover C C Cagle and Fla L Austin will serve two more years. Vote total 2446, largest ever in Roswell school election.

In Santa Fe on February 15 AP reported the New Mexico Senate clashed over whether to meet with the State Federation of Taxpayers Associations in a possible joint session. Majority leader J W Tackett moved to rescind the promise to attend. A debate ensued with some urging a night session. Tackett argued against listening to lobbyists. Motion to table failed 5 to 19 while Tackett prevailed 17 to 7 with Jones Mullis Lee Coe Fleming Mears and McGinnis voting no.

Funeral services for John Wesley Tyree were held at 2:30 PM today at the Talmage Memorial Chapel with Rev. C. C. Hill officiating. Assisting were Rev. D. B. Titus and Rev. H. C. Henderson, music directed by Mrs. R. D. Jones. Casket bearers included H. M. Dow and others. interment followed at South Park under Talmage Mortuary. Tyree died at his daughter's home, Mrs. E. G. Minton, last Saturday at age 83.

In Santa Fe on February 15 AP reports the public affairs committee chaired by Rep. Marie Cavanaugh killed two economy measures, sparking a clash with Rep. W. E. Rose who introduced them. After word battles the bills were revived and sent back to committee. One would cut county officers salaries above 1000 dollars by 20 percent and the other would remove deputies in third through fifth class counties except sheriffs. Cavanaugh defended the panel noting about 10 members present. The House proceeded with other business, while HB150 on semi monthly pay for county officials was recalled to committee after prior defeat.

School Bonds May Be Cancelled By Voter Elections
Santa Fe February 15 AP The senate considers SB118 allowing special district elections to vote on bond reconsiderations if 10 percent of last governor voters sign a petition. House committee substitute for cancellation of delinquent taxes tied to timing passed. A taxpaying voters bill also passed 13 to 11 after debate. The senate appended an emergency clause to a juvenile court attorney abolition bill, projecting about 3600 saving in salaries.

Seligman Says State Is Solvent Despite Vouchers

Bandits Burn Victim Near Tucumcari in Gasoline Fire
Lee Marshall, 50, a homesteader east of Logan near the Texas line, was chained and doused with gasoline by two masked men who set him ablaze in a savage attack. They fled east toward the Texas line after leaving Marshall badly burned and walking three miles to a neighbor for help. The victim, conscious briefly, walked to Tucumcari hospital with severe burns. doctors fear fatal injuries. Sheriff's posse searches underway.
