Charles W. Kruger, deputy chief of the Newark fire department, was drowned in a water-filled cellar at 817 Canal Street while aiding extinguishment of a blaze. He was 57 and had 36 years of service. Fellow firefighters described his leadership as he entered the basement with a dozen men, went missing, and was recovered dead. The fire damaged multiple buildings and threatened a church as crews fought to control the flames.
