State Police Capt. Joe Black reiterates his call for a hitchhike ban in New Mexico. He defends his stance despite a 1953 law reference and amid criticism sparked by a syndicated cartoon targeting the tourist director for backing a hitchhike law.
Chaves County juvenile delinquency cases reached 22 in December, up from 17, with 19 boys and 3 girls. The December statewide tally shows 580 total cases, 497 boys and 83 girls, led by Bernalillo with 199 cases and 179 boys.
The county treasurer reports about 14 650 entries on the Chaves property tax rolls and that first half notices were mailed last November. Second half bills are due by March. State Police criticize the 1953 hitchhiking statute as weak and unenforceable, noting loopholes like standing on shoulders or near fueling stations. See STATE Page 9.
A Senate special committee opened questioning with Sen. Francis Case as the lead witness over a $2,500 campaign contribution allegedly to sway his vote on a natural gas bill. Lawyer John M. Neff acknowledged the money but refused to reveal its source. The $2,500 was given through a friend in South Dakota after Case voted against the bill that a bipartisan majority later supported.
Snowbound ranchers south of the Capitans near Nogal and around Ruidoso received emergency food drops from the Ruidoso CAP yesterday. Today Walker Air Base planes prepared for further drops to marooned people and livestock as the CAP diverged to deliver hay to the Watson and Blaylock ranches and survey the area.
Senate Agriculture Committee approves an election year farm bill aligning soil bank with price supports at 90 percent parity for key crops. Special provisions aid dairymen barley and flue-cured tobacco, with parity set on the higher of two formulas.
Roswell justice of the peace R. Perry Bean, a Democrat, announced his candidacy for reelection on merits and past service. A long time Roswell resident, Bean and wife reside at 115 West 12th Street with two sons, Richard G. and Robert Perry Jr.
Autherine Lucy, the first Black student at the University of Alabama, seeks readmission to classes dormitory access and dining hall rights in federal court. She alleges trustees and Dean Adams enabled riotous conditions to bar her, seeks damages and containment of officials, with hearings set for February 29 before Judge Hobart Grooms.
Roswell residents join two local disk jockeys Ted Taylor and Dave Hull for a Valentine’s Heart Music fundraiser on KGFL. The program runs February 14 from 9 45 p m to midnight with listener requests and donations to the Heart Fund supporting research and equipment.
In Roswell today police court handled one intoxication case while justice court had none. The county jail logged two new jail cards. No ambulance runs overnight at the two funeral homes. Firefighters reported five consecutive days with no alarms, last fire on February 5.

The Associated Press reports New Mexico’s traffic deaths rose to 34 with the fatality of 71 year old Indiana man Frank Smith. He was struck by A L Hanson of Richfield Utah while walking along U S 66 about 12 miles north of Gallup. The crash occurred late last night.
Light planes take off from Ruidoso to aid snowbound ranchers in south central New Mexico carrying fuel food and livestock feed via parachute drops. The Civil Air Patrol marks snow fields with D X and F letters to indicate medical fuel or food needs while 25 inches of snow fall over eight days.
Roswell will be the youth capital of New Mexico on June 29 as the ninth annual New Mexico Boys State opens at the New Mexico Institute. Attendance is limited to 300 with sponsorship duties shared by Legion posts and high schools. Boys will form cities and counties, elect officials, pass laws, conduct elections, and learn government basics in a nonpartisan program. Two delegates will go on to Boys Nation in Washington, D. C., in July.
Robert Sanders and Joseph Gullahorn, both of Phoenix, Arizona, found guilty of stealing 47,664 from a Bank of New Mexico branch at Sandia Special Weapons Base. Jury deliberated 35 minutes in U S District Court and sentencing planned today.
Officials from Ft Bliss say the mysterious flashes east of Socorro New Mexico were likely night firing practice with Nike rockets fired from Red Canyon at Ft Bliss. Holloman AFB reported clear visibility and no rockets fired from there. White Sands Proving Ground halted work due to snow while state police and Civil Air Patrol searched for a downed plane before being told the lights were secret military activity.
