Three Months to Replace B-50s With B-47s at Walker AFB

The 509th Bomb Wing at Walker AFB will convert to Boeing B-47 Stratojet bombers starting June 1, replacing the current B-50s within about three months. Fifty B-50 pilots will depart Walker in March for B-47 transition training as Col. Wilson R. Wood continues leading the wing during conversion.

Local Truck Driver Killed Near Weimar Texas

Knute Raney a 29 year old Roswell resident died in a truck crash near Weimar Texas about 4 15 am yesterday. The truck veered crossed the road hit an embankment exploded in flames. Raney drove for his brother Eugene Raney of 710 S Kansas Ave. He is survived by his parents and several siblings.

Police Funds Urged for Race Track Counties

New Mexico district judge W T Scoggin urged passage of a bill to provide counties with race tracks more police and juvenile funds. The measure would allocate 0.5 percent of parimutuel handle to both the county sheriff and juvenile courts to cover enhanced policing during racing season and support for juvenile delinquency prevention. The judge noted racing activity increases population and crime pressure, and urged constituents to contact their representatives ahead of the Monday hearing.

Santa Fe Woman Hangs Self in Home

A coroner's jury ruled Mrs. Britta Wetzel committed death by her own action by hanging last night in her Santa Fe home. Her body was found by husband Donald Wetzel, a novelist, after she hanged herself in their bathroom. The 28 year old left two children and had recently spent time in a Pueblo sanatorium. Her husband wrote two novels including The Wreath and the Curse, adapted for a Broadway play All Summer Long.

Two Wildcats Reported for Drilling Near Roswell

Unconfirmed reports state two wildcat wells may be drilled within about 40 miles of Roswell. Phillips plans a Devonian deep test explorer in Sections 34 or 35, Township 11S Range 31E, near Atlantic’s No. 1 Federal in Sec 7-11S-3E. Great Western Drilling reportedly seeks a company to drill in Township 10S Range 29E, about seven miles west of the Atlantic Union Devonian test that yielded oil shows in the Wolfcamp.

Gas Tanker Explodes Near Deming After Overturn

A two trailer gasoline truck from Arizona overturned on the outskirts of Deming on Saturday morning and exploded. The driver escaped unharmed. Volunteer firefighters prevented the blaze from reaching a motel and cafe. Four minor collisions occurred as residents and tourists drove by the scene.
