Portales reports organizers rush to complete a state farmers organization to raise prices and curb foreclosures. A temporary state Farmers Holiday Association met to plan a February 18 San Jon conference. A. V. Barker outlined a stay-at-home, buy-nothing strategy if prices fail to cover production costs.
Santa Fe reports the New Mexico Game and Fish Commission approved seeking exemptions from the eight hour law. Warden Elliott S. Barker noted the commission backstopped exemptions for department staff such as wardens hatchery foremen and truck drivers while planting fish. The panel opposed bears being added to the predatory animal list, and warned the eight hour rule would impose heavy costs on needed personnel.
Major G. L. Erwin commandant at the New Mexico Military Institute and his family moved into the new commandant’s residence this morning. The Institute board of regents approved the completed house Saturday afternoon. Built by G. N. Amis, the house faces College Avenue just west of the superintendent’s home and matches its color and design.
Capt. J. A. Mollison, famed long distance flyer, departed Lympne England at 8 11 a m to begin a 4300 mile staged flight to Brazil. The AP report notes the start time as 3 11 a m Standard Time.
Santa Fe February 6 AP a two million dollar highway debenture issue dominates the 11th New Mexico legislature's opening week. Administration leaders push unemployment relief to aid passage while opponents led by Floor Leader Dee Howard oppose taxing taxpayers further. Tax association estimates project 260000 yearly from the gasoline tax fund for ten years to retire the issue and interest could reach 1110000.
Mrs Mary B Skeele 65 wife of Walter Skeele dean of music at USC was abducted in Los Angeles as police hunt intensifies. A note from the kidnapers threatened death if police involvement or a $20000 ransom did not appear.
Mrs Alpha Wanderwell testified in Los Angeles area court over the decedent Captain Walter Wanderwell. She described alleged friction with William J Guy a Welsh adventurer accused of killing Wanderwell aboard the Carma. The witness recounted a 1931 mutiny incident and a release absolving Wanderwell.
Chicago reports Miss Hayburn, 25, an unemployed stenographer, leaped to death from the 33rd floor of the Medinah Athletic Club. A second frozen body was found on a ledge eight floors below, near the room of Alber Erskine Jr., 24, adopted son of Studebaker Corp president.
An interstate commerce commission examiner recommended dismissing a complaint by Roswell and Carlsbad shippers of asphalt against freight rates from North Baton Rouge Louisiana. The report urged leaving existing rates in force with the chance to file exceptions before the commission orders changes take effect.
A major snow storm moved south from Denver with a 33 mile per hour wind, reaching southern Colorado and New Mexico. Denver’s temperature plunged 19 degrees in under three hours as Wyoming warned of severe weather and a forecast of 15 below zero in Cheyenne tonight amid snowfall.
State inspector Marianne Geyer announced all Rio Arriba county public schools including Espanola high school are closed due to poor tax collections and funding shortfalls. Taos schools will also close this week for the same reason.

Shanghai dispatch reports an apparent sensational claim that 4000 Chinese farmers killed themselves to avoid capture by Communists in Kangsi province. Accounts say women and children were evacuated to safety before the siege and air drops replenished food stores. Reds found nothing but corpses.
In Broussa, Istanbul police quell a religious uprising tied to opposition to Kemal's laicist reforms. More than 60 priests and leaders face possible death as arrests continue and a broader plot is investigated amid clashes over Turkish Arabic prayer calls.
President Von Hindenburg swept away the Prussian government citing the Oct. 25 1932 verdict and named Franz Von Papen as commissioner for Prussia. Papen will join Hans Kerrl and Conrad Audenauer in a move to dissolve the Prussian Diet and form a new ruling Triumvirate.
In Santa Fe on February 6 AP reports Dr. J Rosslyn Earp state director of public health recommends dividing New Mexico into ten health districts with a full time health officer for each. Under the current system 31 county health offices exist and the new plan would place duties under ten officers appointed by the state welfare board.
Governor Arthur Seligman urged the legislature to approve a $2,000,000 highway debenture bill calling it the only relief measure left. He said the plan would not burden property taxes and is needed to carry on relief. The bill faced some opposition but was expected to pass in the House later today.
Brig. Gen. Osborne C. Wood the adjutant general was named floor chairman by Governor Seligman for the Roosevelt inauguration in Washington. The governor urged those wishing to attend to contact Mrs. Blair Bannister at the Willard for accommodations as hotels are full.
J. O. Seth former U S district attorney has been appointed consul for the Regional Agricultural Credit Corporation in New Mexico. Other branch appointments were not disclosed awaiting Washington approval.
At a Chaves County Farm Bureau meeting the executive committee unanimously backed a federal proposal to refinance all US farm mortgages for 50 years through Federal Reserve notes secured by existing liens. Loans would bear 2 percent interest under the plan, and a letter detailing the proposal was sent to Governor Arthur Seligman and local state legislators.
The Roswell Presbyterian congregation yesterday approved pencil sketches for a new church building by architects Rapp and Rapp. Estimated cost is $40,000. A committee led by Major John T. McClure, E. C. Gessert, and John Hall will perform a financial survey to raise funds. The church will sit at the southwest corner of Third and Kentucky. Roy Voorhees will finalize the plans.
Governor Seligman said he was undecided on which branch of the legislature would receive his severance tax bill. He indicated both this bill and a teachers pension measure were about ready for introduction.
Officers this afternoon report no clues on the holdup near Tin nie last week in which hijackers got $690. They also report no more evidence in the dog poisoning trouble here.
In Hillsboro New Mexico the trial of Linden Cox and Miss Molly Johnson for the Hot Springs National Bank robbery was postponed indefinitely as officials investigate new evidence. District attorney Fred Nicholas withheld details. The May 10 1934 robbery netted 3400 dollars. Cox and Johnson deny involvement and remain free on bond.
A Royal Air Force long-range monoplane piloted by Squadron Leader O R Gayford and Flight Lieutenant G E Nicholetts departed Cranwell England at 7 15 am to attempt a new world record for a long distance nonstop flight to South Africa.
W.C. Winston of Chaves County decides not to contest the justice of the peace election for precinct one. He states he will file no contest and cites a legal basis regarding ballot naming and an apportionment measure discussed in the Senate by Sen. A.A. Sedillo to simplify and reduce the number of legislators.
It was reported that bond is arranged for Emerson Watts and he will likely be released on bond in a few days. He faces an embezzlement charge connected with his former brokerage firm and has been jailed in Chaves county since being brought back from California weeks ago. He pleaded not guilty at arraignment and is expected to waive the preliminary hearing.
Senator J W Hackett and Attorney General E K Neumann draft an unemployment insurance bill in Santa Fe. Employers would build a reserve. employees could contribute voluntarily. Benefits would be payable for one year. Neumann notes New York is the only state with such a system.
Albuquerque reports Paul A. Draper of Draper and Company predicted a good wool clip in the southwest this spring with prices a notch higher than last year. He said sheepmen would benefit first from any general business improvement, noting no bright spots in the overall situation except wool and lambs likely to show gains.
The Guffin filling station on the west side of North Main Street near Country Club Road was robbed Saturday night, with $20 to $30 worth of groceries, tobacco, inner tubes and auto accessories stolen. Only 40 pennies were taken in cash. Charley Lawey operates the station. Entry was gained by breaking a small glass panel and releasing the night latch. No clues to the thieves were found.
John B. Jones, manager of the branch bank of the Regional Agricultural Credit Corporation of El Paso, will visit Roswell Wednesday to explain seed loan procedures for the Pecos Valley, outline the system, and provide information on applying for loans.
Mrs Warner Blair of Albuquerque New Mexico attends the eighth annual Woman s Patriotic Conference for National Defense in Washington serving as department president of the American Legion Auxiliary in her state and an executive committee member. She visits the Capitol and attends sessions of the House and Senate during the session.
The Chaves county school board will meet Wednesday afternoon at 2 30 in the office of Miss Thelma McCully county school superintendent in the courthouse. The advisability of shortening the present school term because of depleted finances will be discussed.
