A wind driven blizzard spreads across southern New Mexico while the northern half endures 10 foot drifts. Cities like Las Cruces and Albuquerque report halted travel, marooned residents, and heavy snow with icy roads.
President Eisenhower and Prime Minister Eden backed new anti Red measures and warned against Communist expansion. After a three day conference they issued a Washington declaration outlining aims, reaffirming policies and pledging Middle East stability amid Cold War tensions.
State police in New Mexico seek extradition from Nevada for David Cooper Nelson who is charged with the murder of Ralph Rainey in western New Mexico. Rainey, 48, was shot near Budville. his car later found in Utah. Nelson was arrested near Caliente, Nev., on a kidnapping charge and denying the New Mexico killing. Dist. Atty. Dickerson says a psychiatric exam suggests he is feigning amnesia.
Oklahoma A M College Air Force ROTC officers said a new version of the recruiting film was filed after an advance preview showed more bathing beauties than bombers. Col Breedlove noted the film should boost advanced ROTC enrollments but questioned taxpayer reception. The film was shot during cadet trips to Las Vegas and other scenic locations and was intended for civic group showings.
Lordsburns Sir R J Hornback offers 200 dollars for the return of his black faced German Boxer left with the Fletchers after Mrs Hornbacks death. He suspects the dog was stolen not a stray. The dog vanished December 9 as Hornback prepares to return from Korea.

Heavy snow blanketed Chaves County and Southern New Mexico as the first major storm of the year dropped up to 10 inches on the ground with wind drifts. Roads were blocked and school districts closed while residents adapted to icy conditions and carried on amid ongoing forecasts for more flurries. Local officials reported hazardous travel, city truck crews clearing Main Street in Roswell and police assisting motorists. in Ruidoso, 10 inches covered the ground with near freezing temperatures.
Police say $22,622.50 was stolen from three UNM safes in a Tuesday night burglary. About 20 workers were to take lie detector tests as detectives questioned many office staff about access to keys and the money sack.
Washington reports a temporary plan to shorten active service for draftees to 18 months, with up to 100000 men joining the ready reserve for 25 years. Draft calls could rise, perhaps double, to sustain forces, with a June 1957 cap and automatic reserve growth by 1959 under the Reserve Forces Act.

The 1941 Roosevelt letter praising Colin P. Kelly III for a West Point cadet appointment has reached President Eisenhower. Kelly is the son of WWII hero Col. Colin P. Kelly Jr. and lives in Concordville Pennsylvania with his mother Mrs J Watson Pedlow. Now 15 and a Westtown student he will be eligible for admission in about 18 months. The mother asks for privacy and notes Corky has no interest in other military academies.
Robert Bob McNeil 46 of Dexter area announces candidacy for a second two year term on the county commissioners. A New Mexico native and Navy World War II veteran, he took office January 1 1955 and seeks to begin a new term January 1 1957. He is married to Mabel Love McNeil and they have a daughter Mrs Jean Worley of Clovis and two grandchildren Rickey and Lynn Worley.
E S Grear and M I Taylor in Roswell receive telegram from Hugh M Craig of Fort Worth division confirming a nationwide Gulf Oil raise effective Feb 1 1956. Most workers get 6 percent wage rise with at least 15 cents an hour for hourly staff and $26 monthly for salaried staff.
Santa Fe joins a growing list of New Mexico towns facing ambulance service cuts due to unpaid bills. Operators say city or county subsidies are needed to cover charity cases, with Roswell Carlsbad Truth or Consequences and others already halting service. In Albuquerque subsidies and high volume keep operations viable, while Santa Fe seeks city aid for the indigent.
