President Richard M. Nixon bows his head during the closing prayer at the 21st annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington. Rep. Albert H. Quie chairs the event with Dr. Billy Graham delivering the prayer.
President Nixon told about 3,000 leaders that peace on earth must begin with each person in his own heart. He said U S peace in Vietnam is real but fragile and urged compassion, understanding, and national unity across generations races and religions.
Senator R E Thompson of Roswell pushes a bill to create a fulltime district attorney in Judicial District Five with a 24000 salary, as it clears Senate Finance and moves to the House. The measure covers districts over 135000 population and affects J Lee Cathey and James Brandenburg, with Senate support and future probate code plans. Thompson also discusses a 90000 ENMU Roswell Campus appropriation and keeps focus on law enforcement, death penalty limits, liquor laws, and funding for Chaves Mental Health Center.
Detectives in Roswell question William Leon Hopson 39 of Bahama North Carolina in connection with the rape and slaying of six year old Paige Applegate of Fort Worth. Hopson is charged with vagrancy and held in Chaves County Jail while investigators verify information from Fort Worth.
