NATO Soldier Killed in Afghan South and Taliban Ambush

A roadside blast in southern Afghanistan killed one NATO soldier and injured four others while eight Afghan security personnel died in a Taliban ambush near Wardak province. The blast happened as patrols moved through the volatile south, with NATO confirming the death and injuries but not identifying nationalities or exact location. Separately, Taliban forces attacked a convoy of private security guards near Maydan Shahr, wounding six guards and two police officers. The episode underscores Afghanistan’s escalating violence amid ongoing UN concerns over a jailed Afghan consultant linked to alleged talks with Taliban leaders. U.N. representative Tom Koenigs left his post, and interim leadership is set to be appointed.
