Chaves County sheriff's officers say seven bars outside Roswell city limits will stay open until midnight New Year's Eve. Establishments include the Flamingo Club and El Gomez Club among others. Everglades Jet Crash Kills 89 In Eastern Tristar Wreck

The Eastern Air Lines TriStar went down in the Everglades near Miami killing 89 with 80 survivors. Eight remain missing as crews recovered bodies and rescued those in the water muck. Officials said weather was clear and listed possible causes from engine bird strike to pilot error. The crash marked the first fatal jumbo jet incident for the era.

Bridge replacements urged after deadly crash in New Mexico

C D Rickman of Roswell cites about 25 percent of the district 400 bridges as below standards and in need of replacement including several in Chaves County. He says the 20 foot wide 40 year old bridge east of Fort Sumner on US 60 84 is among those flagged for action with warning signs to be doubled. The district covers eight counties with no interstate highways.
