In Portales New Mexico Henry Stoltz was shot and killed by his brother in law A M Boykin amid family feuds. The inquest returned a verdict of death from pistol shots. Boykin was jailed and may be moved to Roswell for safekeeping. Stoltz formerly served as deputy sheriff in Chaves county and was a Roswell jailer.
Japanese forces seize an important position at Port Arthur with heavy losses reported on both sides. About a thousand Japanese troops killed or wounded as the garrison escapes. Fighting along the Shahike River ends with favorable Japanese results. The North Sea incident is mentioned with little detail.
Japanese forces occupied Rihlung fort after months of fighting with a 500 man garrison escaping. In Port Arthur the Japanese advance nears Liaotishan after a December 25 assault. Chinese reports claim a weaker Russian force held trenches for three days before retreating. In St Petersburg Admiral Kasnakoff departs. Vice Admiral Doublasoff to lead the Paris commission on the North Sea incident.
