Enemy Subs Still Operating Off U S West Coast

Navy reports counter attacks have crippled enemy submarine activity along Pacific coast shipping lanes while undersea raiders continue to operate off the coast. Nine ships attacked between Dec 18 and 23, with tanker Montebello sunk and Emidio and Absaroka damaged. six men killed. Earlier, Cynthia Olson and Lahaina sunk offshore and Hawaiian waters respectively. A bomber off California also sank an enemy submarine. Japs Narrow Manila Approach From Northern Luzon Front

Field headquarters report Japanese forces slowly pressed toward Manila in a north south pincers maneuver. On the northern front spearheads moved from mountain defiles onto the Pampanga plains reaching near Urdaneta. Southern thrust reported at Lucena as troops advance from Lamon Bay toward Manila with rugged terrain delaying main battle. General MacArthur deployed forces carefully as Wainwright says troops are withdrawing to prepared lines.

Orbit Ham Bound Over To District Court For Murder

Orbit Ham known as Shorty Ham was bound over to district court without bond on a murder charge. The hearing before Justice of the Peace Pat ONeill followed the December 10 shooting in Hagerman at Mrs Orbit Ham’s Mineral Wells apartment. Two co-defendants were released after the district attorney’s motion to dismiss against William Ham and Thomas Wallace Baker was sustained.

Counterfeit Bill Discovered At Local Depository

George Miller of The First National Bank reported a counterfeit five dollar bill found in a local business after-hours depository. The red seal note with check letter F bore front plate 299 and back plate 388. The Secret Service notified the bank of circulating bills. Miller warned merchants to beware and watch for the blurred Lincoln portrait.

Dutch Airmen Score New Successes Against Japs

Dutch bombers from Indies bases struck Japanese ships off Sarawak Borneo destroying a large ship and a lighter, with a fighter sunk. One civilian killed and six wounded in a Boreno air raid. Dutch officials urged allied reinforcement to amplify the Indies offensive.

J. E. Moore Named Director Of Fed Reserve Branch

J E Moore, vice president of The First National Bank, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the El Paso Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. The term begins January 1, 1942, and monthly meetings are held in El Paso. This marks the second time a First National Bank Roswell officer serves on the El Paso board, following the late E A Cahoon.

Bad Fire Destroys Kitchen At Herring Cafeteria

A fire of unknown origin gutted the kitchen of Herring's Cafeteria at 118 West 4th Street early Saturday morning. Loss is expected in thousands with insurance covering the building and equipment. Ralph Herring praised firefighters for containment and said repairs would begin at once with hopes to reopen soon. the fire was reported around 3 15 a m by a passerby who alerted the station.
