NMMI student killed in auto overturn near Tucumcari

State police reported 19 year old Johnny Gene Buck of Roswell, a student and first sergeant at NMMI, died when his car left the road and overturned south of Tucumcari. The 407th highway fatality this year includes Buck along with other recent NM crashes.

No Trace Found Of Ship Reported Sinking In Atlantic

Swedish freighter Oklahoma radioed it was breaking up in a North Atlantic storm and a rescue ship found no trace. Oklahoma reportedly carried 43 crew and up to 12 passengers. Navy Bluejacket reached the SOS spot but located nothing and continued the search at sea.

Woman's Club to Serve as Church After Blaze

A church building at 512 S. Michigan Ave. was destroyed by a Christmas Eve fire and will use the Woman's Club Building at Fifth and Kentucky as temporary church facilities. The Rev. O. E. Wright announced Sunday School at 9 45 a m worship at 11 a m and Young People's Endeavor at 6 45 p m with an evangelistic service at 7 30 p m. Roswell firefighters checked remaining hotspots while demolition crews razed the weakened walls at the church per request. Chief George E. Daniels led the fire response with Capt. Dan Dwyer and others on Christmas morning.

Medicine Man Joins Fort Stanton Christmas Party

An ageless Navajo medicine man at Fort Stanton medical center attended the hospital Christmas festivities Thursday. Each patient in the hospital received a present at a party held in the dining room.

Men Admit Cottonseed Cake Theft Case

A three man grand larceny group and one man facing forgery charges appeared yesterday before Justice R Perry Bean. J E Tong and Joe Gibson pled guilty to grand larceny while Ollie Nalling pled not guilty. Tong has a long criminal record. Scott pled guilty to forgery tied to a $9 check. bonds set at 1500 for larceny defendants and 1000 for Scott, all bound for District Court.

Zuni pastor Gilbert Wolf dies on Christmas Eve

The Rev. Gilbert Wolf OFM who led pueblo missions in Santa Fe for six years and headed St. Anthony's Mission in Zuni since July 1952 died of a heart attack on Christmas Eve at age 41.

President Eisenhower announced a progressive drawdown of United States ground forces in Korea with two divisions to be withdrawn soon while ensuring remaining forces stay mobile to deter aggression. About 140000 Army troops are in the Far East with 20000 Marines and 3000 Airborne units. Baby Dies of Possible Car Asphyxiation at Drive-in Show

James Warren Jordan, seven months old, died after being found in the back seat of a car at the Jingle Bob Drive-in theatre near Walker Air Force Base. The parents, Sgt. Robert M. Jordan, and three year old Michael Thomas were with him. The heater was on but officials say the car was ventilated. Burial will be in Reidsville, North Carolina. The baby was born May 1 in Roswell. Survivors include the parents, a brother and several grandparents.

Judge suspends fine for shooting fowl in stove incident

In Washington Clifford Mead faced a $100 fine for illegally discharging a firearm after he shot a chicken boiling on his kitchen stove. Municipal Judge Milton Kronheim Jr. suspended the penalty, deeming the act fowl logic.

Wreck Injures Man Critically Near Roswell

Three people were injured in a two car crash 34.9 miles north of Roswell at the intersection of New Mexico Road 20 and U S Highway 285. Daniel Hannefin 23 suffered a compound leg fracture bruises and possible internal injuries Joyce Hannefin 22 head facial lacerations bruises and possible internal injuries John Henry Sanders 43 skull fracture in critical condition. Sanders drove a 1946 Chevrolet while Hannefin drove a 1951 Oldsmobile. Sanders reportedly ran a stop sign.

Five Hurt in Two Car Crash Near Roswell

Five persons were injured in a two car collision on U S Highway 285 three miles south of Roswell at 7 p m. J I Pitts 63 remained unconscious at St Marys Hospital with a concussion. Also treated and released were Leona Campbell 28 head injuries Robert Ellis Campbell 10 Judy Campbell 5 and Sandra Davis 3 with minor cuts and abrasions.

Norman Davenport the 25 year old kidnapper and felon was captured after stepping from a Texas and Pacific train near Arlington Texas Fort Worth police trailed the train to the Arlington depot and had him placed back in Fort Worth Davenport had escaped from the Granite Oklahoma state reformatory on February 13 1951 with his brother Chester who remains at large Davenport had a history of kidnapping including taking three hostages and robbing a trooper and had lived on a New Mexico ranch before rejoining his wife and two children in the Wichita Falls area
